We all know returning to school means making a comeback to UMaine’s society of fun filled weekends, sporting events and catching up with friends. For most of us, these fun and entertaining activities include drinking. Unfortunately, this usually means a few too many sugary drinks; though always delicious they can have more calories in one drink, than an entire meal! So to avoid choosing drinks, which will last longer on your hips than the taste on your tongue, give these tips a shot.
Low-cal mixers:
Most of the calories in mixed drinks come from the mixers themselves. Switch it up and try using club soda or a light juice instead and you’ll save more calories than you think. Another way to cut down on calories is by cutting down on the alcohol in your drink as well. More types of alcohol in your drink, only means more calories in the long run. Mixed drinks, such as Long Island Iced Teas, have a variety of alcohols, which is why they pack the most punch. Ultimately, try to avoid drinks filled with syrups, a laundry list of different alcohols and sugary soda. The worst offenders of these tips are drinks such as Margaritas, Mudslides, Sex on The Beach or Pina Colada’s. Although all delicious, these ingredients will only make your next trip to the gym that much tougher.
Lighter Options:
Many of the light beers, averaging 90 to 120 calories a beer, may be lacking when it comes to taste and overall appeal, but they are truly an easy way to save a few calories, and let’s face it, they really aren’t that bad! Choosing a light beer will help you avoid feeling bloated and sick the next morning. Wine and sangria are other good options as well when choosing your drink of choice on a Saturday night. Adding fresh fruit is always a plus, containing good-for-you nutrients and making it even tastier! For those of you looking for a drink with a little more oomph, such as hard liquor, choose a lesser proof alcohol; the lower the percent, the lesser calories per serving. Mix your liquor of choice with light cranberry juice or a club soda and cut back the calories even more!
Plan Your Drinks :
If the other tips didn’t sound convincing enough to sacrifice your favorite high-cal cocktail then try this route instead. Only carry enough cash on you for one of your favorite drinks, perhaps leaving a few bucks left over for a lighter option later on. This way you can save your diet and some money at the same time.
So when next weekend comes around try to keep these few helpful hints in mind and you’ll be on your way to a healthier, happier and guilt free weekend!
