Whether Halloween is a favorite holiday or a mild bump in the road before Thanksgiving, Halloween in college has an entirely different vibe than it did when we were dressing up as children preparing to trick-or- treat. We trade in our candy for solo cups, and instead of bundling up to walk door-to- door, we seem to go in the opposite direction. So how does Halloween differ from year-to-year as we go from first-years in bunny ears to seniors grabbing the first costume-ish outfit we can find in our closets?
First-year
Hell yes. No longer are we abiding by school dress codes or Mom’s watchful eye. First-year Halloween costumes tend to be a little on the lesser-clothed side and often feature some sort of animal ears. Sure, some of us try to be original (no one else is being a vampire!) but the general theme is we get to look as hot as we want, and wear whatever we want.
Sophomore
Alright, so we did the bunny thing (or maybe we didn’t), but now we want to at least try to be original. Also last year was freezing, so this year we might throw on a few more layers. Yeah, these knee high socks will make us that much warmer. We’re still trying to be kind of hot, but in a more you know, mature kind of way?
Junior
This is the year that we are caring less about the effort that’s going into our costume. We always want to have fun with it, and enjoy it, but we’re tired of going out and seeing a girl across the room in the same costume. We get a little more original with a scary costume, maybe a zombie? This is also the year of the funny costumes. We did the hot thing, we did the cute thing, now it’s time to dress up as Fetty Wap or a witty pop culture reference.
Senior
At this point, we’re lazy. Senioritis is taking over, we’re working, and we’re more focused on Homecoming bringing in all of our upperclassmen friends to spend the month of October preparing for the last weekend. This year we either dress up in a straight up, unattractive funny costume, or take the easy route and do a group thing with our roommates. Either way, it’s still Halloween, we’ll still have fun with it, and we can reminisce about how awesome our costumes have been for the past three years.
Obviously these categories are not set in stone, and everybody is different. Either way, Halloween is a fun opportunity to dress as hot, silly or scary as you want and enjoy a night of shenanigans with friends.
