Bulgarian women tend to dress up more for everyday life than we do in Maine and in the U.S. They usually wear a lot of makeup including lipstick, and have nice hair and nails.  In addition, they frequently wear heeled boots and high heels around town, even in the winter.  Popular colors of clothing include black, red and white.  Black boots and sneakers are very popular, as is wearing workout sneakers such as Nike and Adidas with everyday outfits. Leather jackets are also very popular for accessorizing, as are designer purses, heeled sneakers, fur vests and large outerwear coats and scarves.

Going to class

Students tend to dress however they want day to day, as we might do. There are many international students at AUBG, but many are from Eastern Europe. A student from Bulgaria or Eastern Europe might dress like this for a typical day in class.

Leather leggings, as well as leggings with a leather stripe, are popular. Students rarely use backpacks, but instead carry around designer purses, usually in black. Students in Europe often wear workout sneakers with daily outfits, and scarves and long overcoats are very popular in the wintertime.

Shopping

This might be another typical everyday outfit that a Bulgarian woman would be wearing out, maybe on a shopping day. As mentioned before, leather jackets are very popular in all colors, but especially in a classic black.  Scarves are also popular, in all colors and prints.  I have seen many leopard prints. Light wash jeans are also popular, though all jeans are worn here. Many women wear heeled sneakers, usually in black.

Out at the bar/club

In the winter, Bulgarian girls love wearing black tights and skirts/dresses, again with a leather jacket. The jacket might be taken off once in the club. Also, they would probably opt for a smaller purse, something with a chain strap in a crossbody variety.  Since makeup is very popular, they would probably be wearing red lipstick and winged eyeliner.  Bulgarian women also have very nice eyebrows and always define them nicely. It would be normal to see short heeled booties, either with a thin or chunky heel.

Out to dinner or on the town

Many women frequently wear heeled boots with skinny heels, and tall over the knee black boots are popular.  Additionally, fur vests are a staple winter accessory, as is red lipstick and large sweaters.

Traditional folk dress

Traditional Bulgarian women’s dress consists of embroidered blouses and skirts, head scarves, headdresses and flowers, and mostly red and white as a color, but also some green and black. The dress can vary by region in Bulgaria. The traditional women’s dresses are also adorned with coins and are brightly and intricately woven, often with floral pattern.   The traditional costumes include dvuprestilchena (a costume with two aprons), sukmanena (a dress), sayana (a dress with a slash in front) and ednoprestilchena (a single apron ostume). These are usually entirely homemade with unique designs. Materials used are typically flax, hemp, wool, cotton and silk.  Also according to tradition, the costume can vary depending on if the woman is married or not.
