This week’s campus celebrity is perhaps one of the most famous groups in Orono; the UMaine student section! Although the Black Bears are known for being rowdy supporters of Maine athletics, there’s no better time to sport your best UMaine fan gear than Rivalry Weekend. With Friday’s home game against the Wildcats followed by Saturday’s game at UNH, UMaine Hockey fans can be found supporting their team anywhere from Durham to Orono. A fan section that is notorious amongst the 11 other teams in the Hockey East conference, the UMaine Student Section certainly deserves celebrity status. (And just like A-list celebs, the student section has a tendency to be controversial. If you attended Friday night’s game, you’ll surely understand this allusion…)
According to a tweet sent out by Coach Red Gendron, more than 1400 of the 5084 people who attended Friday night’s game were UMaine students. In addition to their presence at the Alfond Arena, UMaine fans can be found making some noise across nearly every platform of social media. 401 Instagram photos and countless can be found under the #BeatUNH hashtag, and YikYak is full of witty UNH jokes. Whether you’re an avid sports fan, or simply attending the game for fun, supporting the Black Bears at the UMaine vs UNH game is a longstanding tradition at the University.
PS, feeling upset that you missed the games? No worries. Avoid FOMO by following Black Bear Nation on Vine for some great video footage!
