College is a time for self-discovery, to create life-long memories, to achieve your dreams and to have fun. At one point or another, the majority of college students enjoy going out on the weekend to relieve themselves of their stressful classes. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to go out with some friends, have a few drinks and clear your mind of your demanding workload. But all this fun is thrown out the window the second someone is taken advantage of.
As most college students are aware, there is a disturbing amount of sexual assaults on college campuses and involving college-aged students. It doesn’t matter whether the campus is small and private or is large and has division one sports. Unfortunately, sexual assault cases can happen anywhere and anytime. Although you cannot predict when and where these attacks are going to take place, you certainly can help prevent them from happening. Because of the world we live in, it is difficult to trust anyone, especially when you are under the influence. There is a much higher chance of avoiding an attack by just being aware of your surroundings. Being cautious and alert of what and who is around you can go a long way to keeping you safe.
When you are out with friends and they are completely trashed, you need to step up and be the responsible one. Never allow anyone to wander off alone or with a complete stranger. This applies to both men and women. Yes, the majority of sexual assaults involve women, but men can be victims as well. It is sad we live in a society where we have to be aware of our surroundings, but please just follow this word of advice. Also be mindful to always trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable or have a feeling something is not right, follow your intuition. Again, be the responsible friend when you go out. Do not allow a friend to pass out on some random couch alone while they are unaware of their surroundings. While you go out, always keep in mind the awareness and safety of you and your friends. You want to live your life with no regrets, but when it comes to the safety and wellbeing of yourself and your friends, you will regret the “what if” scenarios. Please do not put yourself into this type of situation. Yes, everyone wants to have fun and party. But you do not want to live knowing you could have prevented a sexual assault on yourself or your friend by being more aware and involved.
