Avant-Garde with Rachel: The perfect hair style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

People who watch runway shows like London Fashion Week or Paris Fashion Week, usually are just looking at the clothes, however, it is also important to note the accessories. While most people think that accessories are limited to jewelry and purses, hair is a vital part in how an outfit looks.

This week marks the end of Paris fashion week and the end of the Spring/Summer ‘14 fashion week. Since this is still fall, I will give you some of the trends for Fall ’13 and some tips on how to achieve the looks.

1. Low Ponytails:

Runway shows like Oscar de la Renta, Rachel Zoe and John Galliano all showed collections that featured models with hair in a low ponytail, some were messy and some were sleek.

The above picture is from John Galliano’s collection.

To achieve this look: create an offset part on one side. Use a sleek cream by putting the desired amount in your hands and apply to your hair where the “fly-away’s” are. Create your low ponytail by tilting your head back and gather all your hair at the base of your neck. Reserve one small section of hair under the pony tail. Wrap your hair elastic around your ponytail and pull it tight. (keeping the small section you reserved out) Take the reserved section of hair and wrap it around your hair elastic, hiding it under your hair. Use a bobby pin to secure the hair under your pony tail. Spray your hair at the crown to secure that there are no more “fly-away’s”.

2. Volume:

In Marc Jacobs, Lela Rose and Bottega Veneta they all had models with very big hair!

This photo comes from  Bottega Veneta.

To achieve this look: Wash your hair normally and condition well. Towel dry your hair and add a volumizing product of your choice. (Do not add too much or it will weigh down your hair.) Blow dry your hair upside down adding more volume. When completely dry, return upright and gently part your hair how you wish. Using a 1 1/2 inch barrel curling iron, curl your hair to the jaw line. (Depending on how long your hair is, to achieve this look you may need to curl a little higher!) Use small pieces of hair to add more volume. When you have finished one side of your hair, spray generously with a hair spray of your choice. Complete the other side in the same fashion and spray generously. When the hair spray has settled, brush out the curls. To add more texture you can tease (back comb) your hair underneath. Spray the straight parts of your hair to create the flat look on the crown of the hair. Use bobby pins to keep hair flat and hide them in the volume of the tips of your hair. Generously spray the rest of your hair to keep it secure.

3. Sleek Back:

Shows including Gucci, Missoni and Kenneth Cole all included a sleek back hair style.

The above photo is from Cushnie et Ochs.

To achieve this look: Wash and condition hair normally. Towel dry your hair and add either a volumizing mousse, gel or cream. Blow dry hair upside down until completely dry. Return upright and gently comb back hair from the face trying not to loose any volume. Generously spray hair with a hair spray of your choice.

4. Stick Straight:

Designers like Donna Karen, Theyskens’ Theory, and Reed Krakoff had models with pin straight hair.

To achieve this look: Wash and condition hair normally. Towel dry your hair. Add a straightening serum if desired. Blow dry hair either upside down or straight up. Use a small to medium size hair straightener and slowly straighten small sections of hair throughout your whole head. Lightly spray your hair with hair spray of your choice to maintain its straight look.
