5 Ways: Update Your Halloween Costume

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

Each year there are school girls, cowgirls and police officers running around campus in heels. They’re easy costumes and they are sexy, but this year try to be a little more creative and enjoy standing in the limelight as the only person there with your costume.

Mermaid

This costume can be so easy! Take two different colors of tulle and make one of them your accent color. Have the first color be your “tail” with a bit of the second color running through it. Then take the rest of the material and wrap it around a strapless bra or swimsuit to make the top. Cinch the middle with some pearl beads on a piece a string for a seashell kind of look and you’ve got it covered!

Sandy Olsen from Grease
Another simple costume with items you probably have in your closet. At the end of Grease Sandy comes out donning a skin-tight leather jumpsuit with a leather jacket. Pulling this off is a piece of cake. Get some black leggings (or black pants if you have them), a tight black shirt and a leather jacket. Make sure you tease out your hair for that fluffy 70’s look.

Indian Princess
Think Pocahontas meets Jasmine. Show off your stomach with a tasseled vest and pair it with a short brown skirt. Add feathers in your hair, tote around a tomahawk, or keep a stuffed wolf with you for added effect. Go barefoot (keep your fingers crossed it doesn’t snow like last year), or just wear sandals.

Natalie Portman in Black Swan
For those of you looking for a dramatic costume look no further. Find a black leotard and a black tutu for the costume. Add some feathers to the top the top of the leotard and add them through the tutu. The majority of the costume is the make up! Powder your face white and then put black eyeliner under your eyes and up to your temples. Put black eye shadow over your whole eyelid. Find some feathered fake eye lashes for extra flair. Don’t forget the tiara!

Couples Costumes:
It’s a little difficult finding a costume that both you and your guy can agree on, but no worries. There are a couple costumes here so that hopefully you can convince him to put on one of the them.

Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe
Both of these people were icons during their heyday! Have your man dress up in a baseball uniform and you can find a white, satin dress.

Prom King and Queen
If you’re itching to get very dressed up this Halloween revisit your old prom dress and turn into Prom Queen! Make sure to have a corsage, queen’s crown and the sash!

Sex and the City
If you’re taken, have your guy dress up like Carrie Bradshaw and Mr. Big. If you’re going out single have your friends dress up like the rest of the Sex and the City girls!
