2017 Grammy Awards

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

The 59th annual 2017 Grammys featured Adele and Beyonce as two of the spotlight artists. The Grammsy once again proved to be successful for Adele, who in total won five awards, including one for her albumn “25” which was named album of the year.  Adele previously won album of the year in 2011 for “21”.  She has in total won 15 Grammys.

Adele also addressed Beyonce in her acceptance speech, saying “I adore you and want you to be my mommy,” referring to the recent announcement that Beyonce is pregnant with twins, according to CNN.

Reportedly, when Adele won album of the year stated “What the f*ck does Beyonce have to do ot win album of the year?” according to CNN. She also broke the Grammy in half, though this may have been on accident.  Adele praised Beyonce’s album “Lemonade” calling it monumental and saying she deserved album of the year more. Beyonce won best msuic video and best urban contemporary album for “Lemonade”.

Addditionally, a big moment came for Chance the Rapper who won best new artist and best rap album.  He became the first artist to win a Garmmy with a streaming-only album.

A few artists also addressed the current political climate.  A Tribe Called Quest, along with Busta Rhymes and Anderson. Paak addressed Donald Trump in their set.  Before a song, Busta Rhymes said “I just want to thank President Agent Orange for perpetuating all of the evil that you’ve been perpetuating throughout the United States”, according to CNN.

It is likely that this will not be the last time that celebrities will make their voices heard about Trump and the current state of the political system in our country.  It is great that artists are using big events like this to get their voices out there.  Some feel that Beyonce should have gotten album of the year because “Lemonade” was so important in addressing social issues. Do you agree with the outcome of the Grammy awards? Are you team Adele or Team Bey?
