Why #Selfies Aren’t Selfish

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

We are living in a generation where #selfies are most definitely a thing. Yes, taking a picture of yourself does have a name, and for some people it’s awesome, but for others… not so much. Our young adult lives are filled with hours on our phones, consuming our minds with Twitter, Snapchat and, of course, Instagram. Instagram has become the holy grail of social media, and we are loving it (or hating our lives looking at our friends awesome lives).

Taking a picture isn’t just taking a picture anymore, and that can be really sad. We want the best lighting with the best outfit and the best background. It’s not just a simple thing that comes naturally anymore. And one thing we all know how to do is take a good selfie. I know the perception that some people have; taking a selfie means you want the whole world to look at you and feed you compliments. But, there can be so much more to a selfie post then just that. Selfies shouldn’t be looked down upon, and I’m going to tell you why.

1. First of all, selfies are a way to empower yourself. No girl, you don’t need anyone else to make you look good, you can do it all on your own by just the click of a button.

2. There’s absolutely no pressure. If you want to change the way you look, then do it! There’s nobody around to tell you “We don’t need another picture, that one is fine!” Change that smile, work that up do, you do you.

3. It’s okay to show the world who you are. Just because other people think selfies aren’t for them doesn’t mean you have to do the same thing. Be proud of who you are and show it off to the world, you are beautiful.

Selfies can be that one moment where you show the world, “I’m okay with what you think about me.” You get to show the world that, you know what, “I love myself, and I’m proud of who I am.” So grab your camera and take a few selfies. You never know how empowering it can really be.
