Why It’s Important to Vote

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Election Day is almost here, and boy, I cannot wait until it is over. I can’t wait to go back to watching my TV shows and YouTube clips and listening to music without being interrupted by some political advertisement. Now don’t get me wrong: I feel it is extremely important to go out and let your voice be heard, especially in this election. There are many reasons why you need to vote in every election, yet this one is of utmost importance, as it seems to be one of the most controversial presidential debates in history. For the first time we could have a woman as president, or we could elect a business man who is not a polished politician. Only time will tell what the American people will choose. Make sure to get out the polls and vote on November 8. Everyone’s voice should be heard, and if you’re like me, this could be the first presidential election you’ll be voting in. I want to contribute to this election, as it may be the most historical or controversial election in history.

You should vote because…

It’s your duty.

As a citizen of this great country we live in, it is your duty and privilege to be able to vote in a presidential election. There are many countries around the world where citizens do not get to vote for their leader; it is chosen for them. Cherish the privilege that we have in this great country, and go out and express your opinon through voting. It’s not only your civic duty, but a duty you have to yourself.

This could be the first presidential election you vote in.

This is the first presidential election that I will be able to vote in, and I could not be more excited. I grew up in a household where politics were talked about and debated at a young age. I am so excited that I will be able to do my part for the first time and be able to vote for who I feel is the most qualified candidate.

It is one of the most controversial presdential elections ever.

I believe it is fair to call this one of the most controversial presidential elections in the history of the United States. From FBI investigations of emails to scandals of locker room talk, there is so much extra baggage that both candidates are bringing to this election. Which issue do you find more pressing? Which do you feel deserves to be forgiven? Voting for a candidate will not only show what you find important for the country, but which mistakes deserve to be forgiven.

You should make your voice heard.

We all have our opinions, from whether you think that you should turn right or left to who you think should be president. When someone asks for your opinion, it should be heard. Be an educated voter, and don’t let others or the media determine what you think. This one is all on you, so make it count.

As the next few days roll around, make sure to vote. Often we feel that our opinion doesn’t matter, that it doesn’t count. That is not true. Go out vote, and make your opinion count. You’re the only one who can make a change.

Currently I am a sophomore at the Universtiy of Iowa majoring in Elementary Education. I love writing, especially about how wonderful our campus is!
