Things Every College Student Should Be Thankful for

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Before stuffing our faces and laying on the couch for a week straight during Thanksgiving Break, here are a few things us college students should be thankful for during Thanksgiving.

For starters, we’ve officially survived the madness of midterm tests and projects. We’re getting a well deserved break from staying up until the break of dawn going over flashcards for a test we have been studying for weeks and writing papers that seem to never end. We’re getting a break from sitting in lectures acting like were taking notes but daydreaming about that French Silk Pie on Thanksgivng day.

Being home for Thanksgiving Break means we have a variety of choices for our meals. Instead of looking at an empty fridge every night wondering what to make for dinner and then deciding on having mac and cheese for the third time that week, we are going home to a stocked pantry full of our favorite food and treats. All of this just because our parents and loved ones are so happy to see us again, that they feel one of the best ways to show their love is by making us our favorite food. I’m never one to pass up a good meal, so during Thanksgiving Break, I am more than willing to pull the guilt card and get some good home cooked meals out of the best cook in my family. (Thanks, Grandma!)

Theres nothing better than sitting down on the couch after a great meal and streaming your favorite show on TV. In my case, I will be attempting to watch the rest of “True Blood” during Thanksgiving Break, and hopefully I will be successful in my mission. Doing stuff like this is what Thanksgiving Break is all about: not feeling guilty about binge watching my favorite shows instead of doing homework and writing papers. That being said, feel free to tell Netflix that you will continue watching for the rest of the day.

For those who live in the dorms, Thanksgiving is the first long break of the year so be thankful that for a whole week you don’t have to share a room with anyone. No matter how much you may love your roommate, there’s nothing better than having your own bedroom and not having to sleep on a small twin xl mattress. On a similar note, be thankful that you don’t have to use communal bathrooms during break. Being able to have your own bathroom that isn’t shared with 40 other girls is something to be thankful for.

On a more serious note, Thanksgiving is a time for us to reflect on the people and things that are most important to us in life. It’s a perfect time to hug the ones we love and thank them for all they do for us because everybody has somebody that helped make them who they are. Thanksgiving is the perfect excuse to thank those who deserve it the most.
