A mere three miles north of Iowa City lays a beautiful fall getaway. Tucked into the hillside of a winding country road, among rolling meadows and sparkling ponds rests a place of peace, tranquility, and luscious fruits – this paradise is none other than Wilson’s Apple Orchard.

Upon arrival, it is clear that you have entered a unique haven of fall. And as you approach the barn, the decadent smell of fresh apple turnovers tickles your nose. The facade of the barn-turned-store is bedecked with fallen leaves, rip orange pumpkins, and vivid mums. The grey slats of the barn are richly accented against the fall palate of colors; it is quite charming.

Inside the barn, the store is lively with people and workers all moving about. What’s for sale here? Anything apple: fresh picked apples, apple cider, apple butter, apple cookbooks, apple pies, apple turnovers, apple t-shirts, apples with caramel, apple doughnuts, apple cider shakes… that – that’s about it. But not only apples adorn the shelves at the store. There are also bags of “Iowa Corn” popcorn, jars of jellies and spreads, caramel drizzle for apples, squash, and pumpkins.

Outside, you are met with rolling hills and a picturesque countryside. Down the first hill you encounter a rustic wooden bridge over a stream. All the colors of falls thrive in this setting. A beautiful willow tree frames a clear pond that reflects cotton-candy clouds. And further are rows upon rows of apple trees. Each row is labeled by name and time of ripeness, making picking your own apples nearly effortless. The field is so vast that the apple picking becomes more like a little adventure.

And, nearly best of all, is eating freshly picked apples!  Crisp, flavorful – you can’t go wrong at Wilson’s.

Peter Frankman is an underclassman at the University of Iowa from Burbank, California. He has a few addictions in his life: writing, reading, heavy metal, Adult Swim, and any movie with zombies. He joined The University of Iowa's Her Campus team as the writer of the "From a Guy's Perspective" articles in January 2011 and hasn't looked back since (except to make sure he doesn't write the same article twice). Peter's a major in both Journalism and Creative Writing and hopes to become a writer in some way, shape or form after he graduates. That or the President of the United States, he hasn't really focused too much to say anything decisive yet... or maybe he has, we're not quite sure. If he had to choose a night of guilty pleasures it would include the Beastie Boys, Monster Import: Light, Zebra Cakes, and a marathon of subpar movies that he thinks are amazing (Blade, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Fast and the Furious, etc).
