Name: Kylee Shoemaker

Hometown: Sabula, Iowa

Major: Computer Engineering

Meet Kylee Shoemaker, a junior computeer engineering major here at Iowa, and my lovely roommate and best friend. She’s spunky, she’s sarcastic, and she’s always down for an adventure.

What are you involved in on campus?

“Dance Marathon! After being a dancer for two years, I decided to apply for a leadership position, and now I’m on the Creative Committee. DM is so close to my heart. It really amazes me what a bunch of college students can do for our kiddos and their families at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.

“I’ve also recently gotten involved with the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics, where we build and test rockets and compete in competitions all over the country.”

Favorite study spot?

“Being an engineering major, I’m partial to the Student Commons in the Seamans Center, but when I’m not there, I’m at the IMU getting down to work.”

What are your career goals?

“My dream job is a doctor, but I don’t want to go to school for the rest of my life, so I chose what I think is the next best thing. I want to work on technology along the lines of Cochlear implants. I want to use technology to help people. I don’t know where it will lead me, but it could be improving Cochlear implants, or researching ways to electronically emulate dead nerve cells in a paralyzed body, or making prosthetics that work like real body parts.”

Why did you choose your major?

I really like computers, and everything you can do with them amazes me.

Favorite UI class?

I’m going to sound like a total geek, but I’ve really liked all my computer programming classes. Coding is fun for me.

Go-to snack foods?

“Oreos, Cheddar and Sour Cream chips, or string cheese.”

Favorite coffee shop and your go-to order there?

“Java House. My go-to order is a double-shot caramel dark mocha with almond milk.”

What’s the best advice you’d give your past self?

“Don’t worry about what everyone thinks of you. Be weird. Be you. Live in the moment because if you spend your whole life worrying about the ‘what ifs,’ you’ll miss out on so much.”

Spirit animal?

“Tina Belcher from Bob’s Burgers, but if you want an actual animal, it’s probably a cat because I enjoy sleeping and doing nothing in my free time.”

Who’s your fave roomie? ;)

My cats, definitely my cats. I have one roommate: the fabulous Rachel Green. I honestly don’t know what I would do without her. (I promise you folks that she actually said this.)

Best UI memory?

“After finals week during freshmen year, a bunch of us on my floor moved our mattresses into one room and watched Disney movies all night.”

What do you binge watch on Netflix?

Um, where do I begin? The Office, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, Supernatural, and That 70’s Show to name a few.

Favorite Snapchat filter?

I like the one that kind of makes you look like Sloth from The Goonies.

Favorite quote?

“It does not do well to dwell on dreams and forget to live.” -Albus Dumbledore
