How to Start Spring Semester Right

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Now that winter break is over, it’s time to get back on the school grind. Sometimes after having a month off it’s hard to get back in the swing of things. However, it’s important to make time for a few essential things to make sure you start out the spring semester right.

-Stay Active

Make sure you make an effort to get in some time at the campus rec center. Physical fitness is extremely important and will help you stay energized and healthy. The rec offers a variety of group exercise classes including: Pilates, yoga, Zumba, strength and conditioning classes, and many more at it’s state of the art facility.

-Eat Right

Winter break was full of delicious holiday meals and well stocked pantries back home, but now that you’re back on campus it’s time to cut out the foods that are weighing you down and making you sluggish and start chowing down on the delicious foods that give you all the good stuff you body needs and energy to help you get through your day.

-Stay Caught Up On Homework

Everyone gets caught up in the web of laziness or procrastination, but if you start the semester out strong and stay caught up you’ll save yourself from last minute cramming and the tension of falling behind. Don’t forget, our campus is home to several awesome libraries and a ton of great coffee shops that make a great study atmosphere.

-Get Enough Sleep

Sleep? What is that?

With all of the energy drinks and coffee beverages available, we sometimes forget about the most important thing that everyone’s body desperately needs to be a functioning human. Ideally, college students should aim for eight hours of sleep each night. Not enough sleep can add to your daily stress, lower your productivity level and make you sluggish and inattentive.

-Make Time For Fun

Whether it’s reading, watching movies, or polka dancing, make sure you take time to set the books aside and have some fun. Of course you have to moderate your time and make sure you don’t neglect any commitments, but for your sanity’s sake go have some fun!

-Try Something New

Take a dance class, try out the new restaurant downtown, bake a meal you saw on the Food Network—sometimes you need to throw something new into the mix to keep life interesting. Trying something new can also help distract you from any stress you may be dealing with.

My name is Jess. I'm a senior here at the University of Iowa where I am currently studying as an English major. I love all things related to writing, music, and spending time with the people who mean the most to me. I am currently interning for Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature as a Marketing intern. Someday, I hope to work as an editor or proofreader in a publishing house.
