The snow has finally melted and it’s been above 45 degrees for two weeks now, so why are your Uggs, fur jacket and fleece mittens still hanging in your closet? It’s finally time to let go of winter essentials and usher in spring’s hottest clothes. By following these few easy tips your closet can go from dark and drab to floral and fun. Your closet will thank you for it.
- Pack: Invest in storage containers (buy at Target or Wal Mart) to stow away winter gear. Items you no longer need: Jackets, gloves, hats, Uggs, leggings (leave your two favorite pairs out), hoodies (pack away half), thick sweaters, and jeans (leave your three favorite pairs out).
- Reorganize: Sift through your dresser and re-fold all tees and tanks. Keep spring colors on top of the pile and darks separate. Organize your clothes by color, starting with white in the front and move through the rainbow so black ends up near the back of the closet. A “rainbow effect” in your closet will give it a fresh spring vibe and make you forget that you’ve been wearing blacks and greys for the last five months.
- Invest: Spring is the perfect time to invest in new fun outfits. The essentials:
If you’re a little Hipster:
- Rompers: For the more adventurous, opt for a romper instead of sundress (below). Pair with a thick belt to accentuate your waist.
- TOMS: Invest in a new pair of TOMS; they are great slip on shoes that go with absolutely any outfit. Check out toms.com for all styles. For every pair of TOMS you buy, one pair is donated to a child in need.
- Fedora: This classic straw hat gives a sexy, beach vibe to any outfit.
- Ray Bans: If you really want to invest, a pair of Ray Bans can run you a cool 100 bucks. But plenty of stores offer the same style for a fraction of the cost.
If you’re a little Preppy:
- Sperry’s: Sperry Top-Siders have been an East Coast essential for decades, but the trend is just now coming to Iowa (it’s okay, they were meant for boating at first). A pair will cost you about 70 dollars, but Target and online stores like Zappos.com have similar styles that run half the price.
- Khaki/Denim/Gingham Shorts: Itsy-bitsy shorts are out and longer styles are in (thank goodness). Cuff at the bottom, pair with Sperry’s and you instantly have a chic nautical style.
- Button down shirts: Keep your style effortless with a boyfriend-inspired button down. Cinch at the waist with a belt or wear free flowing, either way pair with bright bangles or a fedora (above).
If you’re a little Boho:
- Sundresses: Express, Target, Forever 21 all offer a menagerie of dresses for every style. Floral patterns are the hottest for springtime.
- Maxi Dresses: Taking the sundress a bit farther, the maxi dress gives the ultimate boho vibe. For shorter girls, pair with wedges and for us taller ladies, pair with gladiator-esque sandals.
- Crochet: Bringin’ the 70s back. Dresses and tanks are the perfect way to wear crochet.
