How To: Eat Healthy while Tailgating

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

College football is in full swing and for many collegiates this means waking up at the wee hours of the morning for tailgating. Like many tailgates this usually entails beer, burgers, and brats, but these combos can put a higher number on the scale. For the fans that are still watching their waist lines but still want to have fun I have some healthy options that allow a full stomach to stay through the whole game.

  1. Skip the burgers and go for the kabob. One grilled juicy burger can equal to almost four hundred calories. Instead choose a healthier option like a kabob. This allows one to put different options on the stick including grilled chicken and vegetables. One chicken kabob is equal to 270 calories. If you feel that you can’t skip the burger make sure to get ground beef and make your own patties or try a veggie burger.
  2. Skip the potato salad and go for the veggies and fruits. One cup of homemade potato salad equals 358 calories. Instead chow on fresh veggies, fruit, or baked chips. These options can bring fiber and Vitamin C also energy to let you stay through the whole game.
  3. Skip the Beer Go for the Vodka. Besides eating, tailgating means drinking a cold one with friends and family. Beer brings a lot of carbohydrates; I would recommend drinking vodka with a fruit blended cocktail or diet soda. One shot of vodka is equal to 65 calories while one can of beer can go over 100 calories.

The main thing to remember while tailgating is portion control. Don’t raid the snack table and be the girl offering to do beer bongs. Stay healthy and cheer on your team until the win.

Peter Frankman is an underclassman at the University of Iowa from Burbank, California. He has a few addictions in his life: writing, reading, heavy metal, Adult Swim, and any movie with zombies. He joined The University of Iowa's Her Campus team as the writer of the "From a Guy's Perspective" articles in January 2011 and hasn't looked back since (except to make sure he doesn't write the same article twice). Peter's a major in both Journalism and Creative Writing and hopes to become a writer in some way, shape or form after he graduates. That or the President of the United States, he hasn't really focused too much to say anything decisive yet... or maybe he has, we're not quite sure. If he had to choose a night of guilty pleasures it would include the Beastie Boys, Monster Import: Light, Zebra Cakes, and a marathon of subpar movies that he thinks are amazing (Blade, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Fast and the Furious, etc).
