Halloween is right around the corner, and you might be either struggling to come up with a costume idea or just trying to throw together a last-minute costume. Since we are in the final Mercury Retrograde of the year (lasting from October 14th to November 4th), now is the best time to channel your zodiac sign in your Halloween costume. If you’re new to zodiac signs, your dominant “fire” sign is decided by your birthday. Each sign is split up into either fire, earth, air, or water sign. Fire signs are passionate and temperamental. Earth signs are grounded, loyal, and stable. Air signs go with the flow and are all about action. Water signs are emotional and sensitive but can also be mysterious. Within those four, there are cardinal, fixed, and mutable signs. Cardinal signs are the leaders, and they value originality and being trendsetters. Fixed signs are stabilizers, and they value to-do lists and being trustworthy. Lastly, mutable signs are adapters, and they’re comfortable with change.
Aries (March 21st-April 19th)
As the first sign and a cardinal fire sign, Aries are strong, courageous, determined, and passionate, but can also be impatient, short-tempered, and very aggressive. As an Aries, my friends tell me all the time how I am one of the most aggressive and chaotic people they know. We are known as being energetic, and we like being first, and we often take action without thinking. For Aries, channeling the strong and determined energy would work best in a superhero costume. Whether you want to go for the classic Batman, or bring out a badass Wonder Woman, being a superhero is the best way to show off your true personality.
Taurus (April 20th-May 20th)
Taurus, a fixed earth sign, is reliable, patient, grounded, responsible, stubborn, and possessive. Tauruses are more likely to see a project through to the end and are extremely committed. Tauruses are more likely to seek high-quality costumes, and vintage costumes like a flapper or 50s girl show off their personality. Even a classic iconic look like Audrey Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe would be great!
Gemini (May 21st-June 20th)
Gemini’s are mutable air signs and are always seen as two-faced because they can be indecisive and inconsistent. But, they are also curious, adaptable, affectionate, and have the ability to learn quickly. Gemini’s can switch between being really social and outgoing and being really quiet and serious in a matter of minutes. Gemini’s make great artists and journalists. You and your Gemini bestie would look awesome in a pair costume, like an angel and devil, or the dancing twin emojis.
Cancer (June 21st-July 22nd)
Cancers are a cardinal water sign and are imaginative, loyal, emotional, persuasive, and moody, pessimistic, and sometimes insecure. Cancers are known as one of the hardest signs to get to know, but once you get to know them, they care really deeply about their loved ones. Cancers are quick to help others and are quick to avoid conflict. Because of their loyalty and care for others, Cancer’s personality fits a nurse or a doctor.
Leo (July 23rd-August 22nd)
Leo is a fixed fire sign, and they’re often known for being arrogant and self-centered. But, they’re also passionate, creative, humorous, and generous. Leos thrive when they’re the center of attention, and they absolutely hate being ignored. They’re natural-born leaders, and their self-confidence only boosts their reputation as the life of the party. As a lion is the “king of the jungle,” Leos would shine in a queen or princess costume. An alternative is to dress like a celebrity. Recreating the most iconic Kardashian photos would make Leos feel like queens.
Virgo (August 23rd-September 22nd)
Virgos are a mutable earth sign, and they’re hardworking, loyal, kind, and shy, worry too much, critical of themselves and others, and can outwork themselves. Virgo’s love nature, animals, and healthy food. They’re methodical, careful, and can often feel misunderstood. Balancing out their love for nature, Virgos would be great as goddesses, animals, or even Mother Earth (if you’re feeling creative).
Libra (September 23rd-October 22nd)
Libras are a cardinal air sign and are known for being balanced. They’re diplomatic, social, and fair-minded, but also indecisive, and they will carry a grudge. They’re peaceful and fair and thrive off of having people in their life that mirror them. They want justice and equality and will do anything to keep the peace. Libras know their worth, and being a girl boss like Beyonce, a pro athlete, or Rosie the Riveter is the best way to show off.
Scorpio (October 23rd-November 21st)
Scorpios are a fixed water sign, and they’re brave, resourceful, passionate, and a true friend, but are also distrusting, jealous, and sometimes violent. They’re passionate and assertive and are natural-born leaders. Because they’re jealous, they hate dishonesty and can be really suspicious of others. Channeling their “negative” traits, Scorpios can rock a villain costume, like Maleficent or Cruella de Ville.
Sagittarius (November 22nd-December 21st)
Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign, and they’re generous with a great sense of humor. Sometimes they’re very impatient and can promise more than they can actually deliver. They have an open mind and love to travel the world. They’re extroverted and enthusiastic and welcome change. They actively seek out experience and value their freedom. Take on a character that shows your adventurous side, like Lara Croft or Katniss Everdeen.
Capricorn (December 22nd-January 19th)
Capricorns are a cardinal earth sign, and they’re responsible, disciplined, have good self-control, and make great managers. But, they’re also know-it-alls, are really argumentative and sometimes condescending, and can be unforgiving. They are always able to meet their deadlines and get things done, even if they procrastinate. They keep themselves on track and have a ton of self-control. Every Capricorn that I know will fight you on anything, at any point. Because of that, Capricorns would make great boxers or other athletes. This lets them prove themselves and seem tough.
Aquarius (January 20th-February 18th)
Aquarius is a fixed air sign, and they are independent, progressive, and humanitarian. But, they run from emotions; they can be temperamental and uncompromising. They love fighting for good causes and helping others. They’re good at solving problems and will help anybody in need. Being a heroine, like Rey from Star Wars, Hermoine Granger, or Princess Leia, will show off their strong, fighting spirit.
Pisces (February 19th-March 20th)
Lastly, the mutable water sign, Pisces are artistic, gentle, wise, and compassionate, but are fearful, sad, overly trusting, and can make themselves a victim. They are romantics and like sleeping, music, and being alone. They hate being criticized and sometimes wish they could escape reality. They are empathetic and will do anything for the people that they care about. They’re known as the most tolerant and are the most forgiving. Pisces love throwbacks and can rock a nostalgic costume, like a Spice Girl, Hannah Montana, Mean Girls, Clueless, or the Cheetah Girls.
