Four Sustainable Makeup Companies Who Show The “Makeup” Of Makeup

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

The earth’s resources are depleting as we speak, and whether you believe that or not, many companies are making changes in their brands when it comes to sustainability. Sustainability is “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.”  With this push for sustainability, makeup companies have been making the transition by going the extra mile with their products naturally. Not only are they transitioning their business to cruelty-free products, but now they are going further by going organic. They do this by removing harmful products, like toxins and unnecessary fragrances. With advancement in cruelty-free to all natural products, they make for a more sustainable company.

This change has not only come about because of the need to save this earth and its resources but because consumers who use drugstore or high-end brands are making sustainability a priority. All of these changes being made to increase sustainability is great because now this will push other companies to follow suit, allowing everyone to be able to use their products. Here are few that started out that way and their contributions to the environment along the way.

100% Pure

100% Pure, founded in Napa Valley, California, advertised themselves as an organic makeup company. Their products are completely free of all harmful toxins, hence the name 100% Pure!

ILIA

ILIA formulates their products with your body in mind. Skin is the largest organ that our body has, and it absorbs just about anything that touches it. ILIA makes products that are from the purest products possible for that reason. Their ethical-sustainable approach is embodied in each piece, and their products use certified organic bio-active botanicals that nourish and rejuvenate the skin.

Josie Maran

Josie Maran is a self-accredited brand that began with a trip to the south of France where she met 70-year-old women who look 40, all with the help of Argan oil. By using 100% Argan oil in her products, she proved to the companies that told her otherwise that makeup can be made without chemicals. Since then she has partnered with earth-loving organizations, like Preserving the Argan Forests, and uses eco-friendly packaging for her makeup products.

ECCO Bella

ECCO Bella creates products from the universe of organics and nutraceuticals, which promote organic farming, but it didn’t begin that way. Nutraceuticals are a food containing health-giving additives and have medicinal benefits. They initially started out protesting against the testing on animals in the production of cosmetics. They consider themselves to be an activist company who receive their material and supplies ethically and stay away from products that may cause harm to individuals.

Sustainability has to begin now, and you may believe that you are only one person that can’t make a difference, but you can. If, like me, makeup is your life, then your first step without any excuses is beginning to choose more sustainable options like these makeup brands or whatever interests you. Once you start making these changes towards better sustainability with things you love, you can expand to bigger and better opportunities to put towards increased sustainability.
