The notorious Black Angel of Oakland Cemetery located on the north side of Iowa City is surrounded by myth and legend. The statue made its home in the cemetery, exactly 100 years ago on November 12. Teresa Feldevert had it constructed to look over her son and her husband, it was once she passed away and her ashes were also placed under the angel that the statue mysteriously started to turn black. The legend is that it was the evil in her that caused it to change color. Not only did the angel turn colors, but another strange aspect of this statue is that there is no date on the base of it, no date signifying when Teresa Feldevert died, and last but not least, the angel is looking down, unlike most angels found in cemeteries with their wings uplifted and looking up toward heaven. The myth is that if you kiss the angel you will drop dead. So the question is, is it haunted or not? That’s for you to find out.
