5 Ways To Decorate For Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

So here we are, the leaves are falling, the sweater weather is amongst us, and we are all rushing for our pumpkin spice lattes. But one thing is missing. How can we truly enjoy this time of year without going back to the very places we call home? That’s right, we’re talking decorating. Whether that is your dorm space or apartment hangout, we’ve got you covered almost as well as your newest poncho. Here are the top five tips to decorating your place for a fall space.

1. Set the mood

When decorating your dorm room or apartment, never underestimate the way a room’s tone is set by it’s lighting. Whether that be hung lights or candles, both can be your best friend. Just be sure you stay safe and use what is allowed in your given space. Pick some simple lights, whether that is clear white bulbs or ones with some sort of subtle cover on them, just avoid colored lights if you don’t want to mesh with the later holiday season come winter. Candles are a nice touch because they also double as a nice way to make the place smell nice full of fall. Pick your favorite scent, don’t worry about being basic and let your mood change completely coming back to your place feeling full of fall spirit and you in a better mood.

2. Have color

Whether that be a new home or just a new week, changing up the place you are redecorating and live in every day helps give you a feeling of a fresh start. And who doesn’t want a fresh start as often as possible, even in fall? Midterms go poorly, change up your room. Bad breakup, get some fresh paint. Depending on the space change an element of color about the room and see the magic happen. For dorms or apartments with rules against painting walls, change the bedding a little or get some fall colored pillows for your futon, and for homes play around and get out the fall colors for new painted wall.

3. Don’t forget the details

When adding decorations, be sure to make sure to think about the details. Let’s say you love fall because of the leaves, so you get some leave printed pillows or get a cool poster of the leaves falling. If you love the sunsets, be sure to add subtle details in your color palette with that in mind.

4. Themes are your friend

Feel free to get creative with decorations. From the beginning of time, themes have been a great way to start, especially for the Halloween season during fall! Put up some cobwebs or spread the love and get purple, orange and black all around with spiders, bats and witches hats. Only your imagination is the limit!

5. Add a personal touch

When decorating, be sure to get personal. Maybe you make a collage of your childhood Halloween costumes, or use a friend’s old costume to hang around the house. Whatever it may be, make it yours!
