5 Underutilized Study Spots at The University of Iowa

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

As the semester winds down here at the University of Iowa, we find ourselves overwhelmed with projects, papers and exams. While it’s easy to just curl up in your bed and do your schoolwork at home, I’ve found it to be extremely challenging to focus and get work done when there are so many distractions at home. Instead, I like to pack a snack, my laptop charger, water and everything else I might need for a couple of hours and head to a quiet spot on campus. Physically leaving my room encourages me to stay at my study spot for a longer period of time and actually get stuff done. There’s no way to get distracted by silly things like nail polish or pictures on the walls. I swear, one time I was trying to procrastinate so hard that when I saw a picture of a friend on my wall, I called her just to talk.

The typical crowded study spot that we call the library is too busy for my personal taste, and I like to study at a spot where I feel calm and ready to tackle all of my homework. There are several spots on this campus that are beautiful, quiet and calming. Most of these places are not too busy, which makes it easy to find a seat and get right to work.

1. Old Capitol steps

When it’s nice out, you’re guaranteed see a couple of people sitting on the Old Capitol steps and for good reason. These steps are a nice place to go between classes or to simply enjoy beautiful weather. Studying doesn’t just have to happen in a library with minimal windows and little fresh air.

2. Adler Journalism Building rotunda

On the first floor of the Adler Journalism Building, you’ll find an awesome rotunda and study space. TVs line one of the walls so you can stay up to date on everything that’s going on in the world. They are muted, though, which makes this space quiet enough to stay for a few hours. They have both options of a table or plush chair, so pick whichever one you like best.

3. Law Library

On the west side of campus you will find the Boyd Law Building, which is home to the law library. Perfect for people living in the west side residence halls, the law library is always guaranteed to be close to home, quiet and not busy. I’ve been there many times and it has never been incredibly populated. With three levels, you’re almost guaranteed to find a table.

4. Art Building West

With arguably one of the most beautiful outdoor spaces on campus and a beautiful interior, Art Building West has it all. If you want to be outside, there’s a small patio with tables and chairs. If the outdoors aren’t your thing, head inside for a bunch of tables and quiet spaces to set up camp for a few hours.

5. Rooftop of Campus Recreation & Wellness Center

The rec may not be the first study space you think of, but they have a great rooftop area for studying. Located off of the third floor, the rooftop is a great place to go if you’re in the mood to soak up some Vitamin D. They even have lounge chairs if a traditional table and chair don’t spark your creativity.

Trust me, I know more than anyone that being productive is hard. However, finding the perfect study space makes it so much easier. Try out one of these spaces located on campus, and you’re sure to be impressed. Have another favorite study spot? Snap a pic and tag us on Instagram at @hercampusiowa to be featured on our page!
