5 DIY Halloween Costumes For Under $15

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Newsflash: it’s almost Halloween!

Some people (like me) start planning their Halloween costumes months in advance, but for others, it’s not on the top of their to-do list. For those of you who don’t care as much about Halloween, love to DIY or were too busy to start planning until now, here are a few cheap costume ideas to get you ready for Halloweekend.

Winnie the Pooh

This costume is super easy and can even be replicated, so you can do a group costume! All you’ll need is a shirt in the color of the character you’re dressing up as, a headband, some felt, and tights or leggings if it’s going to be chilly out. Use the headband and felt to create ears to wear.

Fruit

Another cute group idea, this easy-to-make fruit costume only involves a shirt in the color of the fruit you want to be, as well as some felt or fabric to add details. The great thing about this costume is that even though it’s simple, you can make it whatever you want because there are so many different types of fruit. For your hair, you can use construction paper or tulle and a headband to make leaves.

Darla

Another costume that uses a t-shirt, Darla, is sure to be popular and make everyone you see laugh and feel nostalgic. Besides the t-shirt, you’ll need some wire or pipe cleaner to make the headgear, some leggings and a clear bag with a fake fish. To make the costume even better, don’t forget to shake the bag and yell “Fishy, why are you sleeping?” at the fake fish.

Where’s Waldo

An oldie but a goodie, Where’s Waldo is super fun because you can hide in your friends’ photos for a laugh later on. For this costume you’ll need jeans, a red and white striped sweater, fake glasses (or your actual glasses) and a white or red beanie. Odds are, you own at least one or two of these items already, so it’ll be easy and cheap to get the last things put together for it.

Risky Business

The great thing about cheap Halloween costumes is that they’re also simple, and this costume is the perfect combination of that. To give off some Tom Cruise vibes this Halloween, you’ll just need some knee socks, shorts, sunglasses and a white button-up shirt. Strike a pose, and the costume is complete.
