5 Benefits of Keeping a Gratitude Journal

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

It’s always this time of year when we reflect on all of the wonderful people and things in our lives. We are all so thankful and our hearts are so full, but why must it stop there? Why don’t we focus on the great things and people that make our life amazing everyday?

For one thing, we get too busy. We get hung up on all the small things that bother us. Sometimes we become so consumed in all of the bad things that we forget all that goes right for us every day.

The best way I have found to combat all those negative thoughts is by writing. The key is not to write to vent, but to write to remember all of the simple things that get overshadowed by our disappointments or negative emotions. So here are some fantastic reasons why you should give gratitude journaling a whirl!

1. More Focus on the Positive Things Rather Than the Negative

Writing about the people who changed your day in some small way, a yummy new food you tried, something silly that happened or even something you are proud of yourself for doing, is a great way to stay focused on the positive aspects of your day. It makes you realize that even though some days may seem terrible, there is something good about everyday.

2. Improves Self Awareness and Keeps Your Emotions in Check

Thinking about the things you are grateful for, makes you realize that your life is way more fulfilling than you could have ever thought. Writing down the small things really helps you realize that your friends, family, small achievements and everyday excitements are something worth being happy about. Spend more time thinking about the positive things and your emotions will stay under control or even improve!

 3. Reduces Stress

Ever catch yourself feeling like you just can’t get a hold on your homework, studying or other responsibilities? Well, take a few minutes for yourself and write down some positive things to get your mind off of everything else because trust me girl, you need a break. Taking some time to not think about all of those tasks you have to complete is going to make you more productive after, and reduce some of that stress that’s been taunting you.

 4. Better Sleep

Journaling some gratitude is going to tie your day up in a nice bow. It’s a good way to help you wind down from all the busyness you’ve faced and just sit down for a second. It’s also easier to sleep at night when you think about all of the things that went well instead of everything that went wrong. I promise, you’ll fall right asleep.

5. You Get to Look Back When You Are Done!

It’s definitely a good feeling to see how far you’ve come. There are no negative things (which you’ve most likely forgotten by now) and you get to remember the best parts of the days you’ve had. I like to go back and read when I’m feeling a little extra down that day. It always cheers me up!

My gratitude journal has made a lasting impact on my life and I know it will have one on yours too.
