15 Rom-Coms You Must See

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Need a girls night in? Or maybe you need to force your boyfriend into watching a romantic comedy? Don’t worry, because this list has the 15 best rom-coms to choose from.

15. Clueless

“Ugh, as if!”

This ’90s film, staring Alicia Silverstone, is a modern version of the Jane Austen novel “Emma”. Not only is it funny, but the ending is totally unexpected!

 14. There’s Something about Mary

“Franks and beans! Franks and beans!”

The opening scene of this movie will have you cracking up right from the beginning. Although it may not seem romantic throughout the movie, just wait till the end!

13. Breakfast at Tiffany’s

“What I found does the most good is just to get in a taxi and go to Tiffany’s.”

A classic that you just can’t replace. Audrey Hepburn and her cat, named “Cat,” are both independent until…

12. 27 Dresses

“She’s got electric boobs!”

Always a bridesmaid, never the bride, is Katherine Heigl… 27 times to be exact. Not only is this movie funny, but the scene where she tries on all of her dresses is the BEST!

11. Gentleman Prefer Blondes

“Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.”

Who doesn’t love Marilyn Monroe? This film is not only a musical, but a rom-com as well. It is also where the original song “Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend” is from.

10. You’ve Got Mail

“I wanted it to be you so badly”

This list wouldn’t be complete without Tom Hanks. “You’ve Got Mail” stars Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks as they fall in love over a screen, but hate each other in real life…things were bound to get complicated.

9. Music and Lyrics

“I’ll show you the roof. Its upstairs.”

Not sure if I would call this a musical, but it does have some pretty good songs thrown in there. Hugh Grant plays a washed up pop star from the band “Pop,” who is searching for a comeback, and then finds Sophie (Drew Barrymore).

8. Just Go With It

I need to go make a Devlin”

By far one of the most funniest movies I’ve ever seen. Adam Sandler plays a plastic surgeon who can’t help but to lie to get girls. One lie after another, everyone involved has to “just go with it.”

7. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

“Oh, wedding in Hawaii! Real original!”

Watch out for the opening scene, unless you want to get real personal with Jason Segel. After getting his heart broken, Peter (Jason Segel) goes to Hawaii to try to take his mind off things. However, he runs into his ex there. This film has an all-star cast starring: Jason Segel, Mila Kunis, Russell Brand, Kristen Bell, Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, Bill Hader, Kristen Wigg and others. Needless to say, it’s worth the watch.

6. 50 First Dates

“Nothing beats a first kiss.”

Probably the most classic rom-com out there. For those who haven’t seen this movie (and if you haven’t, turn it on right now), Adam Sandler falls for Drew Barymore, but there’s only one problem… she has short-term memory loss and forgets him everyday.

5. When Harry Met Sally

“I’ll have what she’s having.”

The O.G. rom-com. Dating back to the ’80s, this classic follows two individuals (Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal) who go from hating each other, to not seeing each other for years, to friends to… well, you’ll just have to see the rest.

4. The Proposal

“To the windows, to the walls!”

Ryan Reynolds shirtless? Yes please. Not only does this movie have some great lines that will make you bust out laughing, but it also has an adorable dog. If you’ve never seen this movie, look up the chanting scene with Betty White. If that doesn’t make you want to watch this movie, I don’t know what will!

3. Pretty Woman

“Big mistake. Huge!”

An unlikely love story for a woman who doesn’t kiss on the lips. Edward Lewis (Richard Gere), takes Vivian (Julia Roberts) off of the street, dresses her up and brings her to all of his events in Los Angeles for the week. Not sure how much of a comedy this is, but it is a romantic movie!

2. Hitch

“Q-tip, Q- tip, throw it away”

Will Smith is the date doctor who sets up men who don’t have a chance with the women of their dreams because they are too shy/geeky to go for them. However, Smith’s character (Hitch) never falls in love, which makes things a little complicated when Eva Mendes shows up in his life.

1. Love Actually

 “To me, you are perfect.”

Although this is a Christmas movie, it is the BEST movie you will ever watch. Set in England, it follows multiple stories that all connect together in the end that all have to do with love. Not only do they have every single famous British star in this film, but they also have the most amazing stories that will warm you to your core. If you are ever missing Christmas or just want to watch an amazing movie, watch this one!

Pop the popcorn and fall in love with these rom-coms!
