In honor of the annual observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, UConn made sure that it wasn’t a day off, but instead a day on.

The African American Cultural Center and other organizations on campus sponsored Oppression Ends With Me at Jorgenson Center for the Performing Arts where Melissa Harris-Perry, writer and keynote speaker, appeared.  Harris-Perry delivered an empowering speech not only in remembrance of Dr. King, but also about the ongoing struggles faced by oppressed societies. Her speech was a call to action to the audience to continue educating themselves in order to better understand and ultimately change the world we live in.

Alongside Melissa Harris-Perry, the event hosted various student performers from both UConn and other schools in the area. Overall, it was a great way to spend the day and acquire some new food for the soul.
