TV Shows to Binge Watch This Break That Will Turn You Into a Hulu Addict

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Though I spent what was probably an unhealthy amount of time watching Netflix last semester, I recently got a Hulu Plus account because a few shows that I really liked were only streaming on Hulu, and let me tell you that I was not dissapointed. Now I barely use Netflix at all, as Hulu streams all my favorite TV shows and has created quite a few awesome original shows of their own.

If you’re looking for some new shows to binge over this winter break, and you’re thinking of switching your Netflix Account to a Hulu Plus account (or splurging on both), here are a few of my favorites to get you started:

Wayward Pines

Wayward Pines is so creepy, so exciting and so intriguing that I not only binge watched the entire show in hours, but I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the final episode for two full days. The show, which is made to run in only 10 episodes, is produced by M. Night Shayamalan (a very famous director of supernatural dramas) and truly surpasses expectations despite its shorter length. This thrilling drama follows a secret agent named Ethan Burke as he tries to escape the mysterious and dangerous town of Wayward Pines. This show will literally have you covering your eyes, screaming at your laptop and unable to look away, and it is definitely worth the watch.

Difficult People (A Hulu Original)

Difficult People is a sharp, dry and hilarious comedy about… comedy! Comedians, Billy Eichner and Julie Klausner play themselves in the series that centers around their lives as best friends in New York City. They are indeed two very difficult people, and much of the show centers around the mishaps that they get into due to bad behavior. Billy Eichner, who is also the host of a hilarious Youtube show called “Billy On The Street” is the show’s shining star. The show has 8 episodes so far, and is coming back to Hulu later in 2016. If you’re a fan of shows like The Office and Parks & Recreation (which Eichner was also on!) you won’t be able to stop laughing.

MasterChef & MasterChef Junior

I can’t say enough about MasterChef and MasterChef Junior. During finals week I binge watched a season of each show and I fell in love with Gordon Ramsay… Though I’m not a chef or even a big fan of cooking, this show is basically The Voice of the food world, which means that it’s both dramatic and filled with the most amazing, drool-worthy food. MasterChef is much more hardcore, and MasterChef Junior is comprised of kids as young as 8 years old making the most beautiful dishes you’ve ever seen. Both of these shows will have you rooting for your favorite competitors and are totally addicting, just make sure you have some snacks on hand!

Casual (A Hulu Original)

Casual is a weird show. In the same vein as shows like Portlandia and Girls, it details 21st century life to a fault with both laughter and tears. Casual is a dark comedy about the lives of siblings Valerie and Alex as they try to navigate what love means to them. As the title suggests, both Valerie (who is newly divorced) and Alex (a serial first date-er) must learn to get along, both with their parents, their friends, their pet, and their signifigant others. The show, which is nominated for the Golden Globe for best comedy or musical television series,  is not for everyone, but as a dry, heartbreaking, dark comedy, it’s pretty fantastic.

Stitchers

Stitchers is an ABC Family Drama about a brilliant young woman named Kirsten who is recruited by an underground government agency to “stitch” into the memories of people who have recently died in order to solve murders and learn their world-altering secrets… I know. Though this show has a description that defies belief, comedic and romantic moments amongst its characters ground it in reality as you follow Kirsten and her fellow recruits on their adventures. The cast is filled with smart, strong women, and supportive, gorgeous men… what could be better? The first season of Stitchers is on Hulu, so you won’t know how the series ends, but you’ll be so in love with the characters (I’m #TeamCameron) that waiting for next season will be worth it.

Oh yeah, #TeamCameron all the way…

Happy Watching Collegiettes!

Olivia is a Journalism and English double major who spends entirely too much time watching Netflix and is not even sorry about it. She loves to sing, write feminist musings, hang out with her pets and fantasize about a world in which everything tastes like Nutella. In another life she is best friends with Veronica Mars and married to Logan Echolls (and they're both totally cool with it).
