Very often, the first week of classes is overwhelming. The added pressures of making friends and becoming involved on such a large campus does little to ease the stress. But now that you have survived the first week of classes, it is about that time to start thinking about ways to become involved! Not only does it look good on a résumé, but it’s also a great way to enhance your college experience and meet new people. No matter what you’re interested in – whether it’s sports, music, student government, Greek life, etc. – UConn has something for everyone. Or, if you can’t find what you’re looking for, you and your friends can start a new student group. With over 400 student organizations, you may be asking yourself where to begin. Well, you’ve come to the right place!

Getting involved at a big university can seem like an overwhelming task, so here’s a guide on how to find your niche at UConn!

1. Do some research. A great place to start is on the Student Activities website where you can find an online listing of all the registered student organizations. The website offers an option to browse by category based off your personal interests, or you may also expand your horizons and take a peek at all the clubs. You never know what may catch your eye, so don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and try something new. After you’ve done some browsing, make a list of the groups that interest you. Don’t become apprehensive or anxious if your list is one line or a page long. Attend meetings and info sessions, you’ll get a better idea as to what you want to commit to.

2. Go to the Involvement Fair. Within the first few weeks of every semester, UConn has a campus-wide Involvement Fair where 200+ student organizations are represented. When you first arrive, don’t be intimidated by the sea of people and tables. If you did your research you’ll already know what groups you want to check out. Trust me, your list will come in handy! When you walk in, you’ll get a handout with a list of all the groups at the fair and the number that corresponds with each table. This makes it easier to locate where you want to go. You’ll get to meet representatives, ask questions and receive more information on how to get involved. This semester, the fair will take place on Wednesday, September 7th in the Field House from 2 p.m. – 7 p.m. Stop by at any time between these hours and, if you get the chance, visit the Her Campus table!

3. Follow up. Shortly after the Involvement Fair, most groups hold information sessions or meetings for new members. You can attend as many or as few as you desire. Just because you go to a meeting doesn’t mean you’re committed; it’s simply an opportunity to get a better feel for what the group is all about. From there, you can decide if you want to join or not.

4. Remember to have fun! Getting involved should be enjoyable, not stressful. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in something you’re passionate about.  It is also a chance to try something completely new. Either way, you won’t regret checking out all that UConn has to offer!
