The most famous family in the world is back! Their new show, The Kardashians, dropped on Hulu only 10 months after the final episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians aired on E! Network. So, what’s new? Despite it being less than one year since the last season of KUWTK, the KarJenners have plenty of drama for the new show. Only the first two episodes have dropped, and there’s already a few major story lines, so let’s get into it!
Kourtney And Travis
We can’t talk about the first two episodes of The Kardashians without talking about the brand new addition to the main cast of characters: Blink-182 drummer, Travis Barker, AKA, Kourtney’s new boyfriend. These two are very in love, and they make sure everyone knows it. Almost every time we see them together, they’re making out. It is no secret that Kourtney and Travis are fans of PDA- that much the show has made clear. We are seeing a whole new side of Kourtney. Kourtney was never really shown with any serious boyfriends, but there was always a “will they won’t they” narrative with Scott. Anyone who’s familiar with the Kardashian family is probably used to Kourtney’s typical counterpart, Scott Disick. Kourtney and Scott have three kids together, but called things off romantically in 2015. However, despite the breakup, Scott has continued to be very present in the lives of the whole family, and incidentally, the show. But, in The Kardashians, there seems to be a clear shift in Kourtney’s relationship with Scott. In the first two episodes, Scott and Kourtney have yet to be in the same room together (at least, on camera). It seems that Kourtney has finally decided to choose herself over the constant drama with Scott. At the end of the second episode, Travis, Kris, and Khloe were planning Travis and Kourtney’s engagement, so it looks like smooth sailing ahead for those two (but my heart goes out to that poor realtor)!
Kim on snl (Aka, all roads lead to pete)
The first two episodes of the show feature the lead up to Kim’s appearance on the show, Saturday Night Live. From her meeting with Lorne Michaels to shots of her on set the week leading up to the show, it has been made very clear that Kim’s SNL appearance was a turning point for her. What we all know from social media is that Kim meets her future boyfriend, Pete Davidson, a cast member of the show, while filming SNL. And, thus begins the drama with Kanye that has been splattered all over the internet the past few months. A lot of the hype surrounding the new show has been to get a behind-the-scenes look at what really went down between Kim, Pete, and Kanye, so this SNL lead-up has a lot of viewers on the edge of their seats.
Another thing to note about Kim’s road to SNL is the amount of celebrity cameos and name drops that occurred. We got scenes with Amy Schumer, Halsey, and some of the other cast, as well as several mentions of famous comedians, Dave Chapelle and Michelle Wolf. It definitely seems like the show is trying to show the relationships that the sisters have outside of their family and with everyone we’ve seen on the show in the past.
Kim vs… Roblox?
The show had a full circle moment when one of Kim’s kids saw an advertisement for unseen footage of Kim’s sex tape that was leaked in 2007. The family hasn’t dealt with sex tape-related drama since the first season of KUWTK, so it’s ironic that there might be another sex tape at the start of their new show. Obviously, this causes a lot of stress for Kim, because no one is able to figure out if the unseen footage is actually real, and she only found out about it because one of her kids saw the ad when they were playing Roblox. Kim’s main concern is protecting her kids from being exposed to the tape, as it was being promoted on a kid’s gaming website. Thankfully, Kim now has an army of lawyers that is able to shut the supposed leak down, but it’s unclear whether that is the end of the Roblox sex tape drama.
The lack of Kendall and Kylie
While I know this isn’t a major plot point, I still wanted to bring it up, because where are they? At the beginning of the first episode, we got a little disclaimer saying that Kendall had COVID-19 and wouldn’t be in the episode, but she’s barely even been mentioned by the rest of her family in both of the episodes that are out. Kylie, on the other hand, was present at the barbeque at the beginning of the first episode, but is yet to be seen since. The girls are featured in the season preview, so they’ll be getting air time at some point, I just thought that it was odd that we hardly saw them in the first two episodes of the show.
Overall, The Kardashians has been a hit and has successfully hyped up the rest of the season. The first two episodes felt like an introduction to the new age of the Kardashian family, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
