‘Skin First, Makeup Second’: Guide To Makeup & Skincare

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

One of my favorite trends at the moment is revolutionary makeup skincare. Brands have made great strides to create hybridized products that work to nourish the skin like skincare while enhancing features like makeup. As someone who is very invested in the whole “skin first, makeup second” ideology coined by Glossier, I am absolutely loving this trend and have compiled a list of items that can be substituted for skin-loving products from each makeup category.

Primer

First up is primer. Primer is designed to make your makeup last all day — the products listed below do that and more. These skincare-based primers can tackle a variety of skin issues, from texture to dryness, redness, etc., and still prep the skin for a flawless base.

Foundation and Concealer

Next up is our base, many brands have come up with “your skin but better” products, nourishing tinted skincare that perfects the skin without suffocating it. Here are a few popular picks that cover multiple bases such as sun protection, hydration, and uneven skin tone.

Cheek Products

The cheek products category is a lot of people’s favorite as it brings life back into the skin. Here are a few products that help achieve that natural sun-kissed, flushed, and radiant look.

Lip products

Everyone enjoys a lip product that looks stunning but also feels comfortable. Here are some lip products that combine the nourishing hydration of a lip balm but still give the lips an elevated tint.

Eye/Brow Products

This last set of products is dedicated to lashes and brows. Many companies have started to blend together makeup and growth serums to create both enhancing and fortifying products.
