Single Ladies Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

One of the most controversial holidays is right around the corner: Valentine’s Day!  Most people complain about being single on Valentine’s Day, but guess what, everyone hates Valentine’s Day, whether your FB relationship status is single, married, or in a civil union.

During this season, you can pick up any women’s magazine and there is almost always an article about how to deal with being alone on Valentine’s Day.  It’s like being single on Valentine’s Day is a disease you have to cure.  They always give the same cheesy tips:  1) Celebrate having a great group of friends, 2) Celebrate yourself on this day! And finally 3) Realize that Valentine’s Day is just a holiday created by the greeting card industry.  I’m here to tell you the real reasons why Valentine’s Day is the most wonderful time of the year!

If you are in a relationship, I’m very happy for you, but let me talk to all my single ladies in this article.  Having had many single Valentine’s Days, I have to say this is one of my favorite holidays.  I know, shocking ladies!  One of my many reasons why I love this some would call heinous holiday is the mall is decorated with pink (my fav color!).  I just love walking into stores and seeing yummy pink candies and hearts all over the place!  Okay, so maybe I am a true girly girl, but I am just a sucker for anything hot pink.  During Valentine’s Day stores always have the best jewelry, too!  Just because I’m single doesn’t mean I can’t treat myself!

Okay, the next reason I love Valentine’s Day is a little rude, but I’ve got to be honest here:  During this glorious holiday season you always get to witness a public break up!  The girl is always crying because her boyfriend didn’t plan her the perfect Valentine’s Day date.  She throws a huge teddy bear at her boyfriend and she yells, ”I hate this!”  After witnessing these hilarious displays, you can’t help but think to yourself gosh, I’m glad I’m not that guy.

I always love seeing the lovey dovey couple, even though I hate PDA.  It’s like a train wreck, you just can’t look away.  In high school it was funny to see a couple that was so infatuated with each other that they would run into lockers and walls.  While most of this sickens me, it’s mostly a love-hate relationship with this stuff.
I love Valentine’s Day, but what pisses me off about it is the fact that men are not targeted for being single.  People are always feeling bad for the single woman on Valentine’s Day, but not the single man.  Guess what men, we love being single just as much as you do on Feb. 14.  I don’t know anyone who enjoys picking out a Valentine’s gift for their significant other.

When we were little, Valentine’s Day was always the best because you got to make your Valentine’s Day mailbox!  Even though you had to give everyone in the class a Spongebob valentine, you always chose the best ones for your friends.  The kid that always brought in candy with their valentines was always the most popular.  What kid doesn’t love candy?

While most people are like, OMG Valentine’s Day is almost here! What am I going to do?  For those of you who are freaking out about it, I’m here to tell you the shocking news that Valentine’s Day is just like any other day!  Do I remember what I did four Valentine’s Days ago? Hell no! So guess what, WHO CARES? Throw on some red and pink and have some fun!  Enjoy this wonderful holiday season and be sure to comment with the reasons why you love St. Valentine’s Day!
