Simple Ways to Go Green This Earth Day and Everyday After

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

In preperation for Earth Day, April 22nd I reccomend going green in celebration of this wonderful place that we call home. Saving our planet and preventing further damage to it should be at the top of everyone’s priority list. In case you’re unaware of how to do this, here are some tips on how you can do your part in keeping our planet clean and safe. These methods are simple and easy, and you’ll feel great knowing you’re helping not only yourself and your loved ones, but the Earth as well.

1) Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth. Or better yet, brush them in the shower.

2) Recycle! Most things that you can think of are recyclable. There are recycling bins in every residence hall and all over campus. If you’re not sure what belongs, there are signs to guide you.

3) Turn off your computer/iPad/electronics at night. This saves electricity and money.

4) Wash your clothes using cold water instead of hot. Also, only do laundry when you have a full load, if you can help it.

5) Use less paper napkins/paper towels. Dining halls here at UConn have already implemented ways to help you do this. Instead of cleaning up spills with paper towels, try using a clean rag.

6) Don’t drink bottled water. I know it tastes slightly better than sink water, but this use of plastic is such a waste. Get a Camelbak or Brita bottle and fill up at the stations around campus.

7) Buy locally if possible. This reduces pollution caused by transport and supports small businesses to stimulate the economy.

8) Always turn off the lights when you leave a room.

9) Instead of throwing old clothes, toys, and tools into the trash, consider giving it to someone or donating to Goodwill/a charity. Someone could definitely get some use out of an old backpack, a used pair of sneakers, or your old textbooks.

10) When grocery shopping, try to bring your own bags. Plastic grocery bags end up in the back corner of your pantry and then in a landfill. Reduce waste and invest in some cute canvas bags that hold way more stuff anyway.

11) Pay your bills online, instead of through the mail. This reduces pollution and saves paper, money, and a few walks to the mailbox.

12) Encourage your friends and family to adopt some or all of these tips. Knowledge is power and sharing it could very well save the planet.
