Reasons We’re Obsessed with the Final Five

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

The U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team, made up of Aly Raisman, Simone Biles, Laurie Hernandez, Gabby Douglas, and Madison Kocian, otherwise known as the Final Five, took the world by storm when they won the Team Gold Medal in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.  They may just be the best U.S. women’s gymnastics team in history, winning the most Olympic medals, ever, between the five of them. They are insanely talented performing superhuman skills at the highest level in the sport. Everyone from Zac Efron to Kim Kardashian West is obsessing over these girls and rightfully so.

They inspire us.

These women kicked serious butt during the competition in Rio and they looked like they were having a damn good time doing it. It was hard to catch them without a smile on their faces.  However, winning Olympic gold medals at the ages of 16 to 22 doesn’t come without sacrifice. They spend over 30 hours a week at the gym (that in itself deserves a gold medal).  They prove that success doesn’t come easy but that the work is so worth it.

They are the essence of female empowerment.

Simone Biles silenced comments with her response on being compared to male greats as the best athlete in the history of her sport when she said“I’m not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps. I’m the first Simone Biles.”  Incredible!

They are the definition of ~Friendship Goals~.

From being teammates to competitors, their support for each other never wavered. The bond between them was evident.  Biles even admitted to being more excited for Aly Raisman winning the silver medal in the individual all around than she was about herself winning the gold medal.  They are living proof that when we lift each other up, amazing things happen.

The Simone Biles and Zac Efron Love Story

It started with Twitter-flirting to Zac flying down to surprise Simone and the rest of the Final Five.  Five Gold medals and a kiss from Zac… safe to say she’s living the dream. Wedding Date TBD.

They are full-blown celebrities.

From walking the Rio Olympic Arena to the Red Carpet at the VMAs, they have become superstars. Not only did they shine on the red carpet, but they got to present the Best Female Video Award to none other than Queen Bey. The jealousy is so real.

And if you couldn’t get enough of Laurie Hernandez’s dancing in her floor routine, be sure to watch her on this upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars.

They are just like us.

Despite being professional athletes, they love to eat pizza, ice cream, and fries because let’s be honest… who doesn’t?
