Rachel Says: Turn your Winter Drab into Something Fab

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Snow and ice, and nothing nice! Winter is here to stay for a few more weeks, but dressing like an Eskimo to weather the cold does not have to be your only option. Layering is a fashion-do, but wearing five jackets and head to toe knit wear adds unnecessary weight to a girl’s figure. Wearing pops of color to stand out in the winter white will brighten your look and your mood. Fashion is fun, so don’t let this season’s harsh cold rule your wardrobe.

Personally, the cold weather and gray skies do not inspire me to wear color, but I always try to add subtle pieces of color and pattern to my winter look.  Avoid wearing too much white during the winter months, as it tends to make you looked washed out. The easiest way to add color to your look is with hats, scarves, gloves, and bags! Staying warm while also trying to be fashion forward can be easy when you know what looks good on you! Start off small; wrap a patterned or brightly colored scarf around your neck matched with basic gloves and a hat. Another flattering and neutral outfit of choice; head to toe black paired with a colored bag. Pinks and reds look great against the gray skies and neutral colored jackets.

Another way to keep your winter look in check is to layer! If you’re not in the mood to wear your weight in outwear, layer on the tops and over sized sweaters with a lighter trench or pea coat on top. Black cotton pants and fleece lined tights are a great and chic alternative to wearing jeans with your long layers. The layered look is always in style; finish the look with a scarf draped effortlessly over your shoulders. When layering, or putting together any look, it’s important to keep the same color story. So, if you’re dressing in all neutrals, carry a colored bag and keep your knit accessories to a minimum to avoid looking too constricted and bulky.

It is important to keep in mind warmth and simplicity when it comes to dressing for the cold trek to and from classes. So, remember to avoid the bulky bubble-jacket and complete your look with trendy scarves, arm length gloves, and other basic knits. Find the best hat for you. Knit hats and berets are really popular this season, so do be afraid to try one on! Fashion is about experimenting and having fun, so please, avoid the sweat pants and knee length North Face, and have fun till it’s time to put our jackets back into hibernation.
