We have all experienced the unsuspecting groan that comes with pulling on a crop top only to realize that the little belly pooch you always try to forget about is looking more than little (unless you are a Victoria’s Secret model or just an extremely blessed human being, in which case, you suck). Finding an outfit to go out in is hard enough, but on days when you’re not feeling the skinniest, looking good can seem like you’re riding—no, driving—the struggle bus.

This week’s must-have works worship-able miracles: hiding muffin tops, disguising food babies, and enhancing the smallest part of your waist. Say farewell to the spandex you have depended on for so long (or throw them in the back of your drawer for bar nights with tight dresses) and hello to peplums.

Fitted on top and flaring into loose paneling at the waist, peplums provide a shape that is figure flattering and can be easily paired with skirts and pants. Fear not, for awkward lumps and bumps will be completely hidden by the hourglass shape. So step out of the spandex, finish the last of the Halloween candy and bow down to the shrine of peplum attire that is sure to appear in every online shopping cart.

Peplum skirts and dresses are the perfect way to stay classy when going out. Polished and easy to wear, these pieces look amazing with chunky jewelry and heels. It’s time to make the upgrade from bandage skirts to cute, frilly peplums!

Break out the Amex and clear your schedule for some online or real life shopping. Peplums are hitting the fashion world almost as hard as hurricane Sandy hit the northeast. Here is some inspiration to get you started:

My name is Shannon Gruda and I am currently a sophomore at the University of Connecticut studying journalism. I absolutely love all things fashion-related and I hope to one day be a part of a major publication in New York City. My obsession for magazines and style is far reaching, and I am so excited to be a part of the Her Campus team at UConn. Aside from the fashion aspect of my life, I am a major foodie with a passion for desserts, dance, and traveling. That's all for me!
Caitlin is a Communication major with minors in Sociology and Women's Studies at the University of Connecticut. She has always loved to write, but she caught the advertising bug at UConn and now dreams of creating ads that people will always remember. When she's not studying mass media or reading advertising blogs, Caitlin loves making collages, riding horses, and surprising people!
