As my second semester of sophomore year at UConn is coming to an end, it struck me recently that I am halfway done with college. Though some days on campus can be long and stressful, when this realization hit me I wondered how the past two years flew by so fast. It is hard to wrap my head around the fact that I am now considered an upperclassman, which means that there will be more discussion about plans after graduating, a topic that gives me the chills to even think about.

Throughout the past two years, time itself has taught me many valuable lessons. I’ve learned to cherish each day I’ve been given, each moment in its own because before you know it, the semester is over and times will have changed. Being on this campus, I have genuinely had some of the best memories of my life surrounded by people that I’ve learned to love.

Additionally, I realized the importance of trying new things and branching out. I entered college with a very nervous mindset and spent some of my days wondering where my place was or what I would have to do in order to feel comfortable in this new life.

At the beginning of the semester, I decided to join a sorority. Although I was hesitant about it initially, I’ve met so many new people and it has been a pleasure to get to know each one. Even though it was out of my comfort zone in the early stages, I am thankful to have taken a leap of faith. Now I know how great it feels to take risks, and I will be taking my chances more often as life presents new challenges. I highly recommend getting involved on campus as there are numerous clubs and organizations to become a part of, and you can find your place just like I did. Involvement at school added more excitement, engagement and activity to my college experience while also expanding my social circle.

Another lesson I learned throughout the past two years is that as each semester goes by, you learn more about yourself. As time goes on and you experience both high and low points, you become more mature and expand your personal development. To be frank, I think that I’ve learned more about myself in the last year and a half than I have in the last 10. College life brings about a new side of yourself, someone that you never even noticed before. With each obstacle I’ve become more comfortable with how to deal with sticky situations, and more satisfied with myself as a result.

Lastly, I’ve realized that accepting change is important. Knowing that friendships, people, interests, likes/dislikes and experiences are all bound to change at some point is okay, and oftentimes inevitable. Different chapters of our lives bring about new characteristics and interests, therefore it’s only natural to see shifts in your personal, social and academic lives. A lot of the things that once mattered so much to me have now been replaced by different sorts of values. Life is far too short to juggle too many things, therefore prioritizing in your life is crucial.

Although it can be a little scary realizing how quickly college is going by and wondering what is ahead as an upperclassman, the lessons learned are irreplaceable and there is a lot to look forward to in the future. With each day, remember to take chances and venture away from your comfort zone. Above all, find who you are and make sure to never stop growing.
