One of my all-time favorite things to do is eat (and honestly, I take it very seriously). There’s something about trying new foods and exploring different spots that makes everyday life more exciting. Luckily, the University of Connecticut has some great options and go-to favorites that are definitely worth checking out.
The Beanery
This is honestly one of my favorite cafes on campus. The vibe is just really chill and comfortable; it’s not too loud, but not awkwardly quiet either, so you can actually focus if you need to get work done. At the same time, it’s still a nice place to just sit and talk with friends or take a break in between classes.
The food offered here is also really good, and they have a great variety, so you’re not getting bored ordering the same thing every time. Whether you want something quick, like a coffee or a pastry, or something a little more filling, they have it all. Everything just feels fresh and actually worth the money, which is not always the case on campus.
The location is another big reason I like it so much. It’s super convenient, especially on busy days when you’re going from one class to another and don’t have a lot of time. You can just stop in, grab something fast and go, or stay a little longer if you have time. Overall, it’s just one of those spots that always hits, and I find myself going back to it all the time.
Mcmahon dining hall
McMahon Dining Hall is honestly one of my favorite out of all the dining halls on campus, and we have quite a few (eight, to be exact). There’s just something about it that makes it stand out to me compared to the others. One thing I really like is that a lot of the food is pre-plated, which makes it way easier to control portions without overthinking it. At other dining halls, it’s so easy to just pile food on your plate, but here, it’s more balanced and less overwhelming.
They also have a good variety of options, so there’s usually something for everyone, no matter what you’re in the mood for. The food is actually really good, and a lot of it tastes surprisingly fresh, almost like something homemade, which makes it even better. The location is also super convenient to get to. Since it’s right across from the gym, it’s easy to go there right after and be able to eat good food.
Overall, the atmosphere is calm and inviting, making it a great place to step away from the busyness of the day. It’s a dining hall that offers both convenience and consistency, which is why it continues to be one of my go-to spots on campus.
Whitney Dining Hall
This is the one dining hall on campus that serves ice cream from the Dairy Bar, UConn’s very own ice cream shop, which automatically makes it a favorite. Honestly, that alone is enough to make it stand out, because being able to grab some of the best ice cream right after a meal just makes the whole experience better.
On top of that, the food here is consistently really good. While the location is on the smaller side and doesn’t have as many options as some of the bigger dining halls, it makes up for it in quality. Everything feels a little more thought-out, and you can tell they focus on doing a few things really well rather than trying to offer everything at once. Because of that, it’s one of those places where you can go in without worrying about whether you’ll find something you like.
The dining hall itself is also a big part of why I like it so much. It has a nice, cozy feel that makes it more comfortable and less overwhelming than some of the larger, busier spots on campus. It’s a great place to sit down, relax and actually enjoy your meal, whether you’re catching up with friends or just taking a break between classes. Overall, even though it’s smaller, the combination of good food, Dairy Bar ice cream, and a comfortable atmosphere easily makes it one of my favorites on campus.
The coop
It’s hard to get around to actual fast food places without a car as a freshman, which is why this spot basically becomes our version of it. If you go to UConn, you already know the closest thing we have to that quick, greasy, comfort-food vibe on campus: The Coop.
And yes, the lines for the Coop are almost always insanely long. But somehow, that never really stops anyone. There’s just something about it that makes it worth the wait every single time. Maybe it’s because sometimes you don’t want a full dining hall meal, and you just want something quick, familiar, and satisfying.
This place totally delivers on that. Chicken and fries might be simple, but that’s exactly the appeal. It feels like a break from typical dining hall food and gives you that fast food fix without ever leaving campus.
It’s also lowkey a social spot. You’re always running into people, waiting in line with friends, or making spontaneous stops in between classes or late at night. The wait almost becomes part of the experience. Overall, it’s not just about the food; it’s about having that go-to fast food vibe on campus, and honestly, we all rely on it.
Overall, UConn has some really great food spots that make campus life a lot better. Whether it’s a cozy café, a reliable dining hall, Dairy Bar ice cream, or that fast-food-style stop at The Coop, there’s always something that fits the mood. These are just my go-to places, but I think everyone ends up finding their own favorites over time. At the end of the day, it’s those quick meals, late-night runs, and in-between-class stops that end up being some of the best parts of being on campus.
