Movies to Watch on Valentine’s Day Based on Your Mood

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

If you’re anything like me, Valentine’s Day not only means candy hearts and red shirts but it also gives us all an excuse to watch as many romcoms as humanly possible. These movies are everything you could ever want. They are funny, sweet, heart-warming, and a lot of times, tear inducing. However, choosing what romcom to watch can be a serious struggle. Here’s a list of what romcoms to watch depending on your mood of the day.

Mood: Need to Just Cry it All Out

In the wise words of Hannah Montana, “everybody has those days.” Sometimes we just need a good cry to keep us going. These two movies are sure to do the trick.

One Day

Honestly, this is seriously one of my favorite movies of all time let alone just romcoms (what can I say I love a good cry). This movie tells the story of two people through the same date in time over many years. It explores the two characters’ complex relationship and ultimately how they feel about each other. If you really love the movie, you can also check out the book of the same name.

Shakespeare in Love

This movie is great in oh-so many ways. The story revolves around a young Shakespeare falling in love with a woman of noble birth who he will never be able to marry. If you’re a fan of Shakespeare at all, you will definitely love this movie because of all of the awesome references and jokes. Plus, with a star-filled cast, this movie is a can’t-miss.

Mood: Looking for Love

If you’re in a romantic mood or looking for love, be sure to check out these feel-good & positive movies.

The Proposal

This hilarious movie, starring a very sexy Ryan Reynolds, follows Sandra Bullocks’ character, Margaret Tate who is facing deportation to her native country, Canada. To try and fix this problem, she says she is engaged to her assistant, Andrew (Reynolds). For his side of the bargain, Andrew forces Margaret to come to Alaska to meet his family and from there, romance ensues.

Crazy, Stupid, Love

This movie is the epitome of everything that’s right in the world. From a very attractive Ryan Gosling to the hilarious Steve Carell, you cannot go wrong with this movie. It follows the stories of various people and how their lives intersect. If you’re ever looking for a pick-me-up, this movie will be there for you.

Mood: Missing the 90s

These next movies are quintessential 90s from the looks to the slang. If you’re missing the times of baggy jeans and frosted lip gloss, look no further.

Clueless

This movie is the essence of all 90s romcoms. It follows the story of Cher, a popular and rich high schooler who is good at getting other people to date. Along the way, she slowly falls in love with her former step-brother, Josh. Honestly, this movie is enjoyable for so many reasons but the clothes are so on-point that the whole time you’ll be wishing you had Cher’s wardrobe.

10 Things I Hate About You

10 Things I Hate About You, based off of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, tells the story of Cameron who has a crush on Bianca. However, Bianca’s father has strict rules about his daughters dating, and Bianca can only date if her older sister Kat is. Cameron convinces bad-boy Patrick to try and woo Kat and from there, chaos ensues. This is a great coming of age movie and features the late and great, Heath Ledger.

Honorable Mentions:

Becoming Jane

He’s Just Not That Into You
