The March Madness Run-Down

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Haven’t been following our hunky Huskies as faithfully as you should? No problem, ladies. Here is your quick and dirty guide to UConn Basketball and March Madness. Since the NCAA Tournament has already started, it’s too late to fill out a bracket and win big – but it’s not too late to show your Husky pride.

Let’s start with the basics. Last week the men’s team won the Big East Tournament, a smaller conference tournament of sixteen teams. With this victory comes a high rating from the NCAA Tournament Committee which determines the team’s fate in the NCAA Tournament of 68 teams. UConn received the #3 seed for the West region. The perk of getting a high seed is playing a lower seed team that is not as good in the first round.

For the first round UConn played Bucknell (14 seed) on St. Patty’s and won 81-52. Kemba Walker was feelin’ it. Walker is a 6’1” 172lb graduating junior and a point guard prodigy. I Checked him out on Facebook for you gals, and he appears single.

Other key ballers to check out: sophomore Alex Oriakhi, freshman Shabazz Napier, sophomore Jamal Coombs-McDaniel and freshman Roscoe Smith. Freshman Jeremy Lamb has also been hot on the floor lately. Sorry ladies, this gentle giant is taken!

The last time UConn won the NCAA Tournament was in 2004, and in 2009, the team made it to the Final Four. Of course, it couldn’t have been done without the guidance of Coach Jim Calhoun who has been leading the Huskies to victory for the past 25 year.

Hit the bar or claim your spot on the couch tonight as UConn plays #6 seed Cincinnati, a team UConn beat 67-59 during regular season. You can catch the game on TBS (that’s channel 20 if you’re on campus) at 9:40PM.

Her free time is dedicated to scouring the Internet for discount designer shoes and following UConn and Boston sports. She's training for a half marathon this spring, which (at times) justifies her weakness for mint chocolate chip ice cream. She hopes to see every inch of the world someday, and maybe write about it too.
