I Met My 2023 Reading Goal, Here’s What I Recommend For Winter Break

It’s hard to believe with finals in the way, but we are so close to winter break. As the semester winds down, I’m dreaming of days spent reading by the Christmas tree with a warm drink in hand. I want Hallmark movies in book form this time of year, and realistically every time of the year. Based on what I’ve read so far this year, here are my picks for cozy winter reads that keep the pages turning.

The Bodyguard by Katherine Center

This was the light, easy read my mid-semester self needed. As an English major, I do a lot of reading, but needed a break from some of the classics and I had gotten this book as a buy-one-get-one-half-off deal at Barnes & Noble. The premise is fun; Hannah Brooks, a professional bodyguard, is hired to protect superstar Jack Stapleton from his stalker. Jack’s mom gets sick, and he along with his new guard, travel to his family’s ranch in Texas, but, to avoid discomfort, Hannah pretends to be his girlfriend. The story takes some twists and turns and this story had me flipping the pages.

Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuinston

Transparently, I was inspired to read this book after watching the movie, and although I did it in the “wrong” order, I can speak to the merits of both, which are lovely. Telling the story of Alex Claremont-Diaz, son of the United States president who is aiding her reelection campaign, and Prince Henry, an heir in line to the British throne trying to figure out what’s next, this enemies-to-lovers was a great read. I recommend reading the book and then watching the movie, which is the best order anyway but also leads to a more complete experience. Better yet, spend the day reading the book and then watching the movie.

Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez

This book is the sequel to Jimenez’s Part of Your World, which I read on a train ride earlier this year. It follows the life of Briana Ortiz, a recently divorced doctor, and the new guy at the hospital, Jacob Maddox. Despite getting off to an incredibly rocky start, they soon begin exchanging letters and Briana learns that Jacob is not the menace she once thought he was. I find Jimenez’s writing to flow well, and I was able to read the book from start to finish in about four hours, making it and Part of Your World great options for holiday travel.

Set the Vibe

Although I try my best to read as much as possible during the semester, the energy over winter break is ideal. If you aren’t working your high school job, you probably have a lot of time on your hands. Go to your favorite cafe or curl up by the Christmas tree with a good book. The soundtrack from A Charlie Brown Christmas by Vince Guaraldi is a great listen as you make your way through your TBR. I also want to reiterate the importance of visiting your local library while you’re home! They’re typically decorated for the holidays, have the most helpful staff, and have a great selection of books.
