Hidden Gems on Netflix to Keep You From Getting Bored

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

I have been struggling to keep myself entertained during this quarantine. So, I scoured Netflix for some new things to watch. I have compiled a short list of some good, not always talked about shows/movies that I enjoyed watching. Here they are!

Adam Ruins Everything

This one is a little different. It is a series, but it’s more like mini-documentaries every episode. It’s super interesting and pretty much makes you question everything you ever thought you knew. As the title suggests, the main character, Adam, ruins everything that he talks about. So watch with caution or you could end up hating yourself and questioning your existing.

One Day at a Time

This show is a comedy focused around a Cuban American family living in Los Angeles. Though it starts out a little cheesy, it is actually a really good show. It has genuinely funny moments but also deals with really relevant and pressing issues like racism, politics, LGBTQ+ issues, mental health, and even the struggles that veterans face in their everyday lives. There are only three seasons (with hopefully more to come) and it goes really quickly! I definitely recommend giving it a watch.

Wentworth

Wentworth is basically an Australian version of Orange Is the New Black. It focuses on a women’s correctional facility and begins by following the story of the main character, Bea Smith. This show is intense and dramatic. It shows the struggles of a corrupted prison system and the dangers of getting mixed up with the wrong types of people. It is a long show, but worth putting in the time. It never gets boring.

Good Girls

I devoured this show. I was soooo good. The show focuses on three mothers, all with unique situations, but with the same need: money. Getting desperate, they decide to rob a store to take care of their financial need. Little do they know, in doing so, they have opened the door to a lot more trouble than any of them were asking for. There is never a dull moment, trust me on that. We also see some good LGBTQ+ representation which is always a plus.

The Other Guys

If you need a good laugh, this comedy movie released in 2010 is frikin hilarious. I was skeptical at first, but I was pleasantly surprised. This movie is jam-packed with big-name actors like Mark Wahlberg, Will Farrel, Dwayne Johnson, Eva Mendes, and so many more. The movie focuses on two cops with big shoes to fill and a very confusing scandal intertwined throughout the plot. You will not regret watching this movie.
