Dining Hall Dessert Hacks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Dining hall food is typically not the highlight of university life… Simple changes can take mediocre options to a new level. Check out these hacks to make the sweetest options!

           Root Beer Float

Craving a delicious novelty drink while munching on some mediocre dining hall food? This hack is easy and readily available in most circumstances.

  • Fill up a cup with your desired amount of vanilla ice cream

  • Fill up the rest of the cup with root beer

  • Enjoy your dessert!

Brownie Sundae

When the dining hall has brownies, you know it’s going to be a great day. Making it a sundae? Even better!

  • Put a brownie in a bowl

  • If available, heat up the brownie in the microwave for about 30 seconds

  • Add a scoop of any desired flavor of ice cream atop of the brownie

  • Grab whipped cream and chocolate from the refrigerator in the dining hall

  • Put on the toppings accordingly and dig in!

Ice Cream Sandwich

Free Chipwich? Yes, please!

  • Take two dining hall cookies of any variety

  • Place on in the bottom of a bowl and scoop whichever flavor of your choosing on top

  • Finish with the second cookie

  • Remove from the bowl or eat with a spoon

Hot Chocolate

Some campus’ have hot chocolate machines which use water and chocolate to create the drink, not milk. Create the true version with this hack if a microwave is available in your dining hall.

  • Pour milk into a mug/microwavable glass

  • Heat up the milk into for 2 minutes in the microwave

  • Add chocolate syrup from the dining hall

  • Stir and optionally top it off with whipped cream

Pro Tip: Chocolate milk can also be made this way- chocolate syrup and milk!

Ice Cream Toppings

Most dining halls, unfortunately, do not have sprinkles to enjoy your frozen treat. Instead, try using cereal on top of ice cream. The crunchy contrast is a perfect way change up the typical dessert scene.
