There is no doubt that UConn occasionally gets the reputation of being farmland in the middle of nowhere. Although our campus is huge, sometimes it seems like there is not much going on outside of it. To many people’s surprise, here are some fun and local things to do when you are in the mood to get off campus:

The Adventure Park at Storrs – Located on Storrs Road which leads to campus, this park has a ropes course which is ideal for all experience levels. For adults, tickets are about $45 for a three hour climb period. At night, the ropes even light up for the “Twilight” experience.

The Hop Knot – A quirky and casual restaurant/bar, only about 5 minutes off campus, and is fairly new to Storrs. The menu is pretzel themed, ranging from sandwiches, flatbreads, specialty pretzels and desserts. This spot is perfect for football Sundays, has lots of comfy seating, various board games, and a pool table which makes is a great hangout spot.

Savers – If you are in the mood for some shopping, but looking to save money, take a trip to Savers in Buckland Hills. This store is perfect for thrifting, clothing and other miscellaneous items. Be sure to designate a decent amount of time to shop and truly see what hidden gems you can find.

Farmer’s Cow Calfe & Creamery – Homemade ice cream and fresh food awaits in Willimantic at this small creamery. A variety of unique ice cream flavors made daily will be sure to fulfill your occasional sweet tooth, even as the weather is getting colder.

Willimantic Brewing Company – Even if you can’t legally drink, the menu at this restaurant is mouth-watering. Their nachos are to die for, but their menu is full of options. Plus, a break from dining hall food can always be appreciated.

The Promenade Shops at Evergreen Walk – Although Buckland Hills mall is not far from here, these stores in South Windsor are better if you plan on strolling around and window shopping. There is a good variety of stores at this outlet and dining options as well.

Lucky Strike Lanes Bowling Alley – Who doesn’t love a competitive game of bowling? This is an inexpensive activity especially for a large group of people. This bowling alley in Mansfield Center offers student specials for college students, with $10 bowling on Friday and Saturday nights.
