5 Things to Know Before Getting a Brazilian Wax

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

This past week I finally decided to take the plunge and get a Brazilian wax. Before getting the wax done I went straight to Google to prepare myself. Now that I got the wax done, I realized that the websites I went to gave me useless advice, and made me think that I was going to be in excruciating pain. To help my girls out I decided I would make a list of my top tips before getting a Brazilian wax.

1. Let it GROW (no matter how much you hate it).

In my opinion, this is honestly the worst part about the whole experience. In order to make this process as painless as possible, you have to let your hair grow out for at least 3 weeks. When talking to our waxer, she said that it needed to be a ½ inch long, which is comparable to a grain of rice.

2. Steer clear from YouTube videos.

I know it’s tempting, but stay as far away from the YouTube videos as you can! Each waxing experience is subjective, and you can’t think that your experience is going to be exactly like the ones you see online. When I was researching, I kept on seeing videos about it being super painful, but when I got it done, I honestly thought that it was less painful than getting your upper lip waxed.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Your waxer is there to answer any questions that you have so don’t be afraid, even if you think the question is stupid. You’re in an extremely vulnerable position, and your waxer understands this, especially if it is your first time. She will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

4. Yes, it’s awkward.

I’m going to be 100% honest and let you know that this is going to be one of the most awkward experiences of your life. As I said previously, you’re in a very vulnerable position having someone you just met waxing a personal area. If you are feeling uncomfortable you can always ask to take a break. Your waxer will understand, and will give you the time you need to get yourself together.

5. It’s worth it!

Trust me when I say that this is all worth it in the end! Not only does the wax last a couple of weeks, but if you are someone who is prone to getting ingrown hairs, this is a great alternative to shaving. You don’t have to worry about missing any areas, and after it’s done it really does feel like a brand new you.

Have fun waxing, collegiettes!
