13 Reasons Why Taylor Swift is the Ideal Role Model

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

It’s no secret that some of the most recognizable names today aren’t exactly the best role models.  Some celebrities like to hog the spotlight, some can’t seem to say the right thing, and others we just love to hate.

That’s why it’s refreshing to have someone like Taylor Swift taking over the music world and using her influence for good while remaining true to herself and loyal to her fans. Rather than let the industry influence her, she’s changed the game and set new standards for what it truly means to be a superstar.

In honor of her lucky number, here are 13 reasons why Taylor Swift is the ideal role model.

1. Her lyrics are relatable and inspiring

I’ve heard almost every Taylor Swift song that has been written, and I can say, with confidence, that there is one for just about every mood you could possibly be in.  Do you have a crush that doesn’t know you exist?  So did she in “Teardrops on My Guitar.”  Are you feeling down or left out?  You should probably listen to “Tied Together with a Smile” or “Mean.”  Are you feeling revengeful because of your ex?  Well, “Blank Space” is the song for you!  Her songs also inspire you to do what you want to do- “Long Live,” anybody?  Not to mention that her lyrics have always been clean.  It’s refreshing to be able to play one of her albums and not worry about your younger sibling sitting in the car.

2. She’s the epitome of class

I have never seen Taylor Swift look bad.  Ever.  Without even touching on her award show outfits (which are always fabulous), let’s talk about her street style. No matter if it’s a crop top and skirt combination or a sundress, Taylor always looks flawless.  And let’s not forget those heels.  I think my closet wants them just as much as I do….

3. She connects with her fans

Perhaps some of you have heard of “Tay-lurking?”  It’s been proven time and time again that Taylor likes to keep tabs on her fans, check in on them, and help them out when she can.  We’ve seen some of that kindness first-hand here at UConn.  And can you imagine receiving a surprise visit from her or a gift for “Swiftmas?”

4. She stands up for her fans

If there is one thing you shouldn’t do, it’s probably mess with Taylor’s fans (a.k.a. Swifties).  Not only will her fandom bring down its wrath on you, but Taylor herself might put you in your place as well.  On several occasions, Taylor has interceded online to help fans who were being bullied or criticized. She always seems to have the very best response too… but that’s what you get when **YOU’RE** being a hater.

5. She empowers other women

She is always looking to be an inspiration for young girls and is always looking out for other women.  Taylor has spoken out about being a feminist and has shown her support for Emma Watson in her mission to diminish the stereotype associated with feminism.  And this past International Women’s Day, she took the Pledge For Parity.

6. She handles haters in the best way possible

How about that 2016 Grammys acceptance speech?  Enough said.

7. She doesn’t over post or brag online

Taylor keeps her fans updated on all of her social media platforms, yet she doesn’t post multiple times a day, everyday.  Her posts are also very positive and upbeat and this leaves fans excited to see what she’ll post next.

8. She is very down-to-earth

Even though she is one of the most famous people in the world, you can see through her social media that Taylor still really values the simple things, like baking with friends and cuddling with her two cats, Olivia and Meredith.

9. She is not afraid to be herself

Taylor is not the type to hold back and this is seen most of all through her dance moves at awards shows.  They have become one of her well-known (and most-appreciated) traits.

10. She is a great businesswoman

Besides having endorsements with major companies like Keds, Taylor has also trademarked certain lyrics, owns a lot of real estate in many different places, and isn’t afraid to break it off with companies like Spotify if she knows she isn’t getting the profits she deserves.

11. She is an insanely talented performer

I haven’t been to a Taylor Swift concert yet, but I know I won’t be disappointed when I get to go.  Based off of the online clips I’ve seen from her very successful 1989 World Tour, Taylor sure knows how to put on a concert that is exciting, sassy, and super entertaining.  I’d be lying if I said her 2016 Grammys opening performance wasn’t my favorite performance I’ve ever watched on TV.  Maybe Taylor could perform at a Super Bowl Halftime Show sometime?

12. She doesn’t flash her relationship in front of everyone

If someone didn’t tell you that she and Calvin Harris have been dating for a year, you would have to do some digging through her social media to figure it out.

13. She is very close to her family and friends

Swift is always keeping her fans updated while on family vacations and she always supports her friends, especially the members of her highly talked-about “girl squad.”  One friend that she constantly shows support for is Ed Sheeran.  Her reaction to his first Grammy win (in a category that she lost to him) was priceless.

People may change, but I think it’s safe to say that Taylor Swift will always be the humble, giving person she’s been since she released her debut album “Taylor Swift” in 2006.
