12 Lessons I Learned After Studying Abroad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Studying abroad is an amazing experience that every college student should be able to be a part of.  After spending a semester in Europe, here’s a list of all the things I have learned about studying abroad.

1. You WILL gain weight, but that’s okay!

Just remember you are eating some of the best food you will ever have.

2. The friendships you make while abroad will be unlike any other relationships you have back home.

They understand what it is like to move to a new country and travel the world with you.

3. You will come back more independent.

No matter how independent you were when you started.

4. You quickly learn how big the world really is…

5. And also how small it can be…

Your best friend’s roommate’s best friend from home is best friends with your abroad roommate. Weird.

6. You learn to step out of your comfort zone.

You will find yourself trying foods and experiences you never thought you would.

7. Traveling solo is sometimes the best option.

If you can learn how to travel solo, you can do anything.

8. Not everything will go as planned.

But hey, unpredictable can be fun…right?

9. Leaving your host city, in most cases, will be the hardest thing you have to do.

*cries for days*

10. Learn to focus on all of the things you did do and not focus on what you didn’t do.

11. Learn to document your travels.

It’s the best way to keep those memories alive.

12. You will definitely find yourself along the way.

Studying abroad is a truly life-changing experience.
