10 Things Every Student With a Desk Job Can Relate To

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

While not every office or desk job is the same or has the same rules, for the most part they are pretty similar. Being a college student at a desk job can be great — or it can be awful.

Pros:

1. You aren’t going to be busy 24/7.

Odds are, you’ll have free time frequently throughout the day where you can relax, take a walk around, and take some time for yourself.

2. Nights and weekends off.

Nothing beats that 5 o’clock mark on Friday when you have the whole weekend to repay yourself for the work week.

3. You don’t have a strict uniform.

Most offices have a semi-professional attire, but it definitely beats an apron and hat or any other assigned uniform.

4. You can learn so much from your superiors.

Even if you aren’t doing work related to your major, you can still learn a lot about a professional work environment and business from your bosses and coworkers.

5. You work at your own pace.

The best part about a desk job is that you don’t have anyone breathing down your neck all day. A lot of the time, your boss will just give you a task and a deadline, leaving you to develop the skills and to pace yourself.

Cons:

1.  Sitting in the same place every day is so BORING.

Offices are pretty plain, there are minimal windows, and if you work in a cubicle, you are probably isolated from human contact.

2. If it’s full time, the days are so long.

In the winter you will work from before it gets light out until the sun goes down, only seeing the sweet light of day during breaks. It’s a long day.

3. Nothing exciting happens.

Offices are super boring. Unless your coworker brings their dog in for the day, you will not see anything exciting.

4. Small offices amplify sounds.

If you’re hungry at 11 and your lunch isn’t until 12, have fun trying to conceal your monstrous stomach growling from your cube-mates. They will hear it.

5. You’re the youngest one in the office.

If you’re the youngest one in your office, which you probably will be, your work friends will be scarce. Your coworkers will most likely try to give you life advice or hook you up with their kid. Awkward.

Hopefully your desk job has more pros than cons, and your time is worthwhile. If not, it might be time for a different job!
