Since going natural 5 (!) years ago, I’ve come to learn a lot about taking care of my hair, and how to keep it looking and feeling as healthy as it can. I’ve also realised a few aspects of natural-hair care are non negotiable during the winter months

Moisture is key. This is always the case, but it becomes especially important when the weather crosses over to sub zero degrees and it becomes even more dry outside. I’ve discovered a few products and methods that ensure my hair stays moisturised (even when it feels that the dry weather is on a mission to do the opposite)

Deep Conditioner

Shampoos can sometimes leave your hair feeling stripped of all its moisture and too dry to be salvaged by regular rinse-out conditioner- this is where deep conditioner comes in. I deep-condition each time I wash my hair but once or twice a month may be all you need. My favourite deep conditioner is both affordable and easily accessible- try Aussie Moist’s 3 Minute Miracle and thank me later.

Leave-In Conditioner

Arguably the most important component of the whole process, it helps to keep my hair soft and manageable even beyond my initial wash day. I tend to use thick, water-based conditioners – Shea Moisture has several to choose from.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Hear me out.

Its more than just a tasty addition to sauces and salads- this medium-weight oil helps to seal in the moisture I try so hard to work into my hair. Its scent isn’t amazing but it is mild enough to be concealed by all the other (better-smelling) products that I use. For extra moisture-sealing power, mix in a little organic shea butter as well.
