If you Google āthe coffee bar san marcos tx,ā many reviews may describe the drinks from this cafe as the perfect refreshment alongside shopping in San Marcosā historic downtown. Iād have to agreeā The Coffee Bar has been the reigning champion in my search for the best iced blondie in town. There is also a hint of magic in an aimless stroll-around once the weather is pleasant and you have the miraculous blessing of having both a break for longer than an hour and a little bit of money to spend (unless youāre an indecisive window shopper, like me)Ā
I walked over from campus on a sunny Thursday afternoon from class with some homework and deadlinesāand admittedly got distracted by the eight-dollar rack at KnDās Boutique, another local businessābefore arriving at The Coffee Bar and being greeted by the steampunk-esque robot and spaceship tchotchkes that sit in the window.Ā
With antique wood furniture, healthy green plants, indie rock and dreampop such as Saint Etienne and Bjƶrk over the speakers, big windows and minimal artificial lights that allow the Spring sunlight to spill inside, this cafe is an environment that warmly welcomes you to a friendās house⦠if your friend’s house was a historic building.Ā
Before I got to the pesky chapter outline waiting for me, I got to speak to the general manager, Sophia. I asked a few questions alongside my flowery iced London Fog with lavender syrup.Ā
Favorite signature drink?Ā
āThe BlondieāĀ
Same!
I feel like thereās a cafe everywhere I turn in San Marcos. What sets The Coffee Bar apart from others?Ā
āThe baristas. They are so personable and really create a relationship with customers.ā
Describe a day (working) here.
āIām a GM, so my role now is a lot different than my role when I was a barista. As a barista, you come in and open the shop. We have a lot of regulars come in the morning. So, making conversation with people. It’s a lot of making coffee and cleaningā rinse and repeat.ā
In my personal experience with customer service, branding and building an environment, these play a major role in the job. What atmosphere do you hope to foster for The Coffee Bar’s patrons?
āI hope that our patrons feel safe here, and that they feel included and welcome. We really just want to create a fun, cozy environment for people to hang out or study. We want our environment to be whatever our patrons want it to be.ā
āIāve worked here for a long time, and it feels like my kitchen,ā Sophia responded when I asked how the physical surroundings wonderfully create such a warm space.Ā
Once I wrapped up my conversation with Sophia, I returned to my favorite table to study. Continuing to try new things, I opted to keep my headphones off for once and try their strawberry almond muffin (unwarmed, please donāt judge me). From my table, I saw this small businessā emphasis on localism and community come to life. There are nods to San Marcosā cultural history of fictional creatures like mermaids and aliens in The Coffee Barās branding, and in photos on the wall featuring UFOs alongside historical places in town. Even in the restroom, you can find flyers for events, subletting, community fundraisers, and more. To the right of my favorite table to study at is a little free library, and all around are humans studying, reading, and connecting with one another.Ā
There is no denying that The Coffee Bar is so San Marcos.
