Beyond the Lineup: The Controversy and Culture of ACL 2026

My favorite time of the year is here, in full swing: Austin City Limits. However, this year’s lineup has sparked major controversy across social media and among Austinites. Nonetheless, ACL is home to the music and the fashion that many bring to the table. 

THE LINE-UPS

This year’s lineup is not the usual lineup you would typically see over the years. The lineup’s constants are pop, country, rap, local artists, and other types. However, this year is very different. It is filled with more millennial pop and EDM music, which many festival-goers were pretty upset with compared to what they expected. If I’m gonna be honest, I too was one of the disappointed fans at first. I did still buy my ticket because I did know that I wanted to see a couple of the artists, but I did expect more too. But I did take the time to actually sit down and listen to some of these artists I was unaware of. While doing this, I discovered a good number of bands and musicians. It isn’t my typical type of music I would automatically put on, but I really did enjoy it. Some of my recent faves have been Fcukers, Audrey Hobert, and Underscores. To understand the lineup, I categorized them based on vibes and themes. 

For a more throwback, nostalgic Tumblr feel, some artists to see are The Chainsmokers, Parcels, Saint Motel, and Rebbca Black. Each artist captures a distinct side of the 2010s vibe, from radio hits to chill indie aesthetics and internet culture. 

Let’s take an upbeat or dark EDM/House atmosphere; I recommend seeing Fcukers Snow Strippers, Levity, and it’s murph. Each of these artists gives either high-energy dance music or slowly vibing your body to the music. 

Now, let’s slow things down by taking a chill, mellow aura; I would definitely suggest Lorde, Palace, Cannons, and Night Tapes. While in these artists’ crowds, I would for sure feel transported into a different safe realm. 

FESTIVAL FASHION

Over the years, the go-to styles have been western (cowgirls), some type of BOHO, or simple leisure. I have personally fallen victim to these styles. Yet, a shift has been coming around with a different type of style. I would describe this as new-age western or casual 2010s. Flowy sheer dresses or ponchos have been the it-style this past year, with funky shorts underneath. 

Animal print has had a huge rebrand of how it’s worn, with sparkly cheetah print pieces, but I believe the new animal print that is going to dominate the game is zebra or giraffe print. I started to see small items from various creators with them wearing purses, shoes, or on their nails. 

To be honest, it doesn’t matter what you wear; it just matters that it’s comfortable and wearable during this Texas heat and dust storm that is slowly brewing at Zilker Park.
