Every Halloween weekend in New Orleans, the “Voodoo Experience” is put on in City Park of New Orleans. Voodoo (as it’s normally called) is a three-day concert featuring over a hundred local and famous artists alike. To get a feel of what Voodoo will be like this year, check out this custom-edition sample lineup below featuring artists that will be in NOLA this weekend:
1.) Give ‘Em What They Want – The Vettes (T.V. – EP)
The Vettes have appeared at Voodoo for the past two years, and it’s easy to see why. “Give ‘Em What They Want” is part techno/part pop and all around awesome.
If you are anything like me, you will definitely make it a priority to see them playing Friday night.
2.) Psycho – The Stone Foxes
It’s clear that Voodoo is saving the best for last. This is because The Stone Foxes will be playing this Sunday, the last day of the concert series. The instrumental background of this song is phenomenal and the lyrics are about an ex who is….well, psycho (who hasn’t been there though, right?).
3.) Sweet Chalmette – Johnny Sketch & The Dirty Notes (Bandicoot)
The lightheartedness of “Sweet Chalmette” just makes you feel….happy. Listening to this song makes you want to pick up the ukulele on the beach and play it for hours, all while taking in the good island feel. However, these band members are pure New Orleanians, which you can tell just by listening to their lyrics. Most people have no idea that Chalmette is actually a suburb of New Orleans, and also the beloved home of this band. Watch out for them this Friday.
4.) Sing Like the Sun – Rotary Downs (Chained to the Chariot) (Saturday)
Rotary Downs is another New Orleanian band that will be featured this year at Voodoo. Definitely up-and-coming, Rotary Downs have won many awards around New Orleans including “Best Rock Band” at the Big Easy Music Awards. “Sing Like the Sun” incorporates folk/bayou elements which makes its easily one of the most unique rock songs I have heard in quite some time.
5.) MoneyGrabber – Fitz & The Tantrums (Pickin’ Up the Pieces)
The first time I heard this song, I could have sworn that it was produced in the 1960s (I’m definitely getting the Franke Valli & The 4 Seasons vibe here), but in fact, this song came out just last year in 2010. Voodoo or not, everyone needs to listen to this band, and definitely this awesome song.
